I'm sure it's out there but I'm not asking the right way...

When I right click on a .jpg file one of the options is Edit. When I click on edit it opens MS paint with the jpg loaded. I what to change the program used from MS paint to my picture editor. I don't know how to do this. Would someone in the know please enlighten me.

    Running with XP Home Edition.

    Thanks,

Isn't there a difference between opening a file and editing a file? I realize you can change what program opens a file but I wanted to leave that alone as when I "open" the file (or double click the file) I want to "preview" the file not edit it.

    Thanks,

"open" a file means to open the program associated with that file type and do whatever you want to do to the file in that program, limited only by the program's features.

If the program associated with jpg images is mspaint, then open and edite are one in the same. The default editor for images in XP is ms paint, the default image viewer is Windows Picture & Fax viewer.

Double clicking a jpg image will open the file for viewing in the pic & fax viewer UNLESS some other application has become the default program for the filetype.

Right clicking an image file will give the options to:
    Preview
    Edit
    other stuff

The default Edit program is paint. This is based on a registry value for the context menu as well as the Edit link in the Picture & Fax Viewer. This should allow you to change which program is used for "edit ":

To add to what TonyT just posted ....

I double click on a jpeg and it previews in Windows Picture & Fax Viewer.

I close that down and right click on the jpeg and on Open With and select Photoshop and it opens in Photoshop.

I close down Photoshop and right click on the jpeg and select Edit and it opens in the default editor which is Paint.

I close Paint and double click on the jpeg and it opens again in WP&FV

No association changes are made by these actions.

While I agree that when you open a file you are using the program associated to the open command, be it I.E., PSP, Paint, notebook... what ever. I don't agree that the open command and the edit command are the same.

I guess I'm just a gear head but the two "commands" are very different to me so I used the information you gave me and updated my registry to use paintshop in place of paint.

Thanks for the info, that is exactly what I was looking for.

Quite simply, edit is not possible unless the file has been opened in a program that can edit the file. Any file, to be read or viewed must be opened in a program to read or view it. Technically speaking, for the file to be viewed in Picture & Fax Viewer it has to be opened.

    open
    (v) To make an object accessible. Whenever you access a file (that is, you edit a text file or run a program file), the operating system opens the file.
