Ok, we need to get a registry key exported to see what it actually shows. Please do as instructed below.

We'll first back up your registry. This is just a precautionary step, and you can delete the saved file once we are done.

Click the 'Start' button, select 'Run', hit 'Enter'.

When box appears, type 'regedit', hit 'Enter'.

Navigate to the following key, by unticking the '+' next to each subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Right click the Winlogon key and select 'Edit' from the menu. Notepad will open up with the contents of your registry file, go to 'Edit', choose the 'Select all' option and then copy the contents to post back here. You can close the editor once you have copied the information.

I think I did this right. It's late...

I'm getting some other virus crud again. There is a program tha had shown up on the computer telling me of a back door Trojan that I need to dowmload some program to protect my computer. Not sure were it came from or how it got on here.

Ok, the new thing is a SmithFraud\Zlob infection, do as instructed below. I'm still working with the reg info.

    Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter "; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool "; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore you may get an alert.

I know I'm getting kinda off topic here (from what we started working on), but when I open my Internet Explorer This internet security site pops up http://thesafetytool.com/ and says that W32myzor.FK@yf is a spayware and I need to download from their site to be safe etc...

Whats this? And how do I get rid of it?

You likely got it because your system is not properly updated and patched from Windows Update. That or someone downloaded a codec which they thouhgt was required to view a video.

Next step removes this infection, still working on the other reg info.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site. Please follow the instructions exactly in the order listed; this is very important!

Please download, install, and update the free version of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 formerly Ewido Anti-Malware:
    1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu ".
    2. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found! ". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
    3. From the main Ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
    4. After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful "
    5. Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? "; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter ".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

AFTER SmitfraudFix finishes (and after a reboot if required), please open Ewido. (If a reboot is required, please boot BACK into Safe Mode.)
    • Click on Scanner
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "Remove" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop
    • Close Ewido
Then please restart it into Normal Windows. Please post the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt into this thread, along with the Ewido (please edit out all cookie Recycler and restore\system volume folder references) report and a new HijackThis log.

When I install AVG there is no "additional options" so I can't uncheck anything. And when I do open AVG there is no warning about the database. What should I do? I didn't start anything yet.

OK, looks like we cleared out that part of the infection, now lets move onto the other, reg portion.

I had someone help me with this, that's why it's taking so long.

Copy the code below to a notepad file, save it to your 'C' drive as a reg file named fix.reg
    Code:
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
     "Shell "=-
     "Shell "= "Explorer.exe "
Please hit the 'Ctrl' key + 'Alt' key + 'Delete' key to bring up the Task Manager and select the 'Processes' tab. Then find, high-light and select 'End Task' on the following process:
    explorer.exe
This will make you lose your start button and taskbar.

    With task manager still open:
    • Hit the 'Applications' tab.
    • The hit the 'New Task' button
    • In the 'Create New Task' box type:
      regedit /s c:\fix.reg
    • Hit the 'OK' button.
    • In Task Manager, hit the 'Shut Down' tab, choose 'Restart'
    Let machine reboot.

Search for this file and delete it:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vmmdiag32.exe

Run HJT and give me a fresh log please.

Here is the HJT log. FYI upon restart and logging on there was no longer a error message saying that vvmdiag32 couldn't be found. And during the search no file by that name was found. Think we got it?

Looks like we may have. Lets fix a couple lines and delete.

Run HJT, and place a check next to the following lines, then, with all browsers and windows closed, hit 'Fix checked':

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Winstq] c:\msupd01133593.exe

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Winsth] C:\msupd01133593.exe

Reboot, into 'Safe mode',and search for, then delete, if found, the following files/folders:
    c:\msupd01133593.exe<<<--this one

Reboot and run ComboFix first(remove old version, update the tool please), then HJT and post both logs back into this thread.

    Well, well.....it looks like................a clean log file!!! :D :p

As soon as you finish reading this post go to Windows Update, don't stop to check any email, don't stop to check your fav sport site, don't let anyone touch the computer...go immediately and get this sucker patched.

I want to thank you for being patient with me as I struggled thru this one. I had to call in the cavalry, Blender, who is a genius guided me thru and created those reg fixes so we could finally rid that sucker.

You can also delete all the special tools I had you download, if you ever need them again, it is highly probable they will have been updated.

I don't see a firewall, get one right away. Either of the following will do, XP SP2 firewall is really not sufficient for you.We have 3 more things to do, mostly maintenance and then our recommendations:

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp folder
The app below will help with temp files.
    Index.dat Suite

Also, delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion.

Here is a link which describes how security apps work with WIN XP machines.
XP User Accts Security Apps Operation

To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL the apps below, which are just as good the fight against ad/mal/spyware as AdAware & Spybot S&D:

    SpywareBlaster
With SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 , just DL, install and check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using IE restricted sites protection as it's not a very large database. Use IE-SPYADs below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine install WinPatrol v10.0.5.

Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

Links for tutorials for all the apps I mentioned can be found on my site as well.

Confused about which apps are good or not? Read about Rogue/Approved Anti Security apps

And just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly. Keep track of updates for ALL your security needs here:
    Calendar of Updates

Subscribe to update alerts for all the above security apps here.

You can also see my own ongoing security testing with all the above apps proving how securely you can safe with them installed.
