System File Checker tells me I have the wrong CD?

    My problems started with "Window Picture and Fax Viewer" locking up the system so I came here and did a search. One of the corrective actions I read about was running sfc /scannow. So I ran it.

    It asks me to "Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD now." However, it does not like my Windows CD with includes SP2. It tells me I have the wrong CD. I do not have a separate SP2 CD. And my CD is legitimate. I bought it myself. I had no problems installing it way back when and I have no problems keeping my system up to date, which it is now.

    I did an Explore on the CD to be sure a) the CD drive was working properly and b) that the CD was readable. No problems at all.

    If anyone can tell what I am doing wrong I would greatly appreciate it.

    This may be a path problem. If you are familiar with the registry, and
    know how to restore it in case of system failure, look at this key...

    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SourcePath:R*EG_SZ:<drive letter>: 

    After exporting the key to a file - for back up, point the path to the
    drive letter for your CD.

    scout321x--If PeteC's suggestion does not help, consider the following.
    Does that error message have a Retry button? (Does the message look like the first graphic on this page:
    Using the System File Checker Tool )?

    If so, just keep clicking Retry. After 10-15 clicks sfc /scannow should proceed to completion.

    But that is a nuisance. You may want to consider the advice a little further down in that reference about copying the I386 folder from your WinXP CD to the drive/directory on your PC that holds the Operating System. That is usually C:\ .
    Then you have to change the SourcePath entry in your Registry to C:\ so that sfc /scannow will look for the I386 folder there instead of your CD-ROM drive.

    You go to the same key as suggested by PeteC--HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SourcePath, click on SourcePath in the left panel and make the two changes in the right panel. Reboot. Then run sfc /scannow.

    Whether you do this or follow PeteC's suggestion, it is best to back up the SourcePath Registry key before making any changes to the Registry. After you click on SourcePath in the left panel, click File|Export. That will create a .reg file. (Remember where you saved it!). If you do not like the changes, just click on the .reg file to revert to the Registry settings before you made the changes.

    P.S. If you try my suggestion and it does not work, what is the entry in the SourcePath Key in Registry for "ServicePackSourcePath "--the line above SourcePath in the right panel?

    Thanks, guys!! I will give these a try this evening and let you know. I just got in and cleanup and dinner and a little rest are my first priority.

    And Pete, registry changes don't scare me. I back it up about once a week too.

    A System Restore point set manually prior to any registry changes is a quick way to revert any problems if they arise from the registry edits.

    Good, but why not daily using ERUNT which can be run as a scheduled task once per day on first boot?

    I keep forgetting to direct comments to the original issue of Picture and Fax Viewer:

    1. Click Start | Run
    2. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
    3. If this doesn’t work, try typing this in the Run box: regsvr32 /I shimgvw.dll

    Test.

    You should receive an message that the registration was successful. If not, please report back.

    If you do get an error of any kind from the above, the registry entries required may not be correct.

    Scroll down to line 80. Disable or Restore Picture and Fax Viewer
    Click on Restore

    pictureandfaxrestore.reg is the file that will download. Double click the download file.

    Reboot and do again the regsv32 instructions above.

    Test.
