    Hello,
When I open My Computer, I have My documents, and Tom's Documents listed. How can I delete Tom's Documents, as it has the exact same thing as My Documents? If I open Tom's Documents and delete anything, it deletes it My Documents also. Any help greatly appreciated.

It's just a 'shortcut' to your personal "My Documents" folder located in your user profile.

If you right-click the "Tom's Documents" folder you'll see "My Documents" listed at the top on the General tab, and next to Location it will say: C:\Documents and Settings\Tom.

I see, it says C:\Documents and Settings\Tom. How do I get rid of Toms Documents folder, and only have My Documents? Right clicking Toms Documents, will not let you delete the folder. Right clicking individule files in Toms Documents will let you delete that file. But, it also deletes it in My Documents.

Coyote--Since deleting files from the Tom folder seems to delete them from the main My Documents folder, perhaps move the Tom folder somewhere else--a different directory, so you will not see it even though it remains on the PC.

I have not tried it, but perhaps now you can delete files from it without affecting the main My Documents folder.
P.S. I have many My Documents folders on my PC. One is just C:\My Documents, which is the repository of all the usual files. Another is C:\Documents and Settings\MyUserName. The latter is empty.

One wants to be a bit careful doing this.

    It would help to know:
. Is this XP Professional, or XP Home?
. When you installed either, Did you provide during Setup the name Tom as a user?
. What name do you use to logon? Administrator? Tom? Something else?
. Did you every rename a user? Say Administrator was renamed Tom? Or vice-versa?

For now, right click on the Start button, left click on Properties. Click Customize. Click the Advanced tab. Scroll down and set the display of My Documents to 'Do not display this item.'

Tell us what happens. Are there any entries for My Documents, or My Documents - Tom in the Start Menu now?

Second test, if the My Documents folder appears as an Icon on your Desktop, what name is used? Does 'Tom' Appear in the icon Desktoption? If the icon for My Document is not present, right click a blank area of the Desktop, Properties, Desktop, Click Customize Desktop, and checkmark My Documents in the top box. Please let us know exactly how this is described. Note: if 'Tom' appears on the Desktop, you can rename this icon. Click once on the icon, and hit the F2 function key to allow a rename.

I am using XP Pro. In User Accounts, it shows TOM Computer Administrator. I never renamed a user. I set the display of My Documents to "Do not display this item." There are no entries for My Documents in the Start Menu now. MY Documents does appear as an icon on the desktop. It says "MY Documents." Tom does not appear on the Icon.

Tom's Documents is not in Shared Documents. It is a folder of it's own. When I delete anything from it, it also deletes it from My Documents. I tried to move everything from Tom's Doc, to My Doc. I get a message," Cannot move, the destination folder is the same as the source folder. "??

Yes, it is. On my WinXpPro computer, I have a single account and in the right hand pane (My computer - Explore) I have two folders, "Shared documents" and "MyName - documents ".

One "MyName - documents" folder will appear for each user account on the computer.

If there are two users, Husband and Wife, there will be two such folders: "Husband - documents" and "Wife - documents ". When logged in as Husband, the "My documents" folder will be the same as the "Husband - documents" folder. When logged in as Wife, the "My documents" folder will be the same as the "Wife - documents" folder. In family situations with a low trust level ... ... the folders can be made private and Husband can not see what Wife has going on (and vice versa). If they have made their respective folders private, they can choose to have files in the "Shared documents" folder which both have access to.

    The folders are identical.

You can as discussed earlier prevent their appearance in the Start Menu. You can rename the desktop folder if you so choose.

As I mentioned above, if you want to "fix" this, the process is a little complicated and a little dangerous, but it can be done.

In essence, you need to find the SID that is identified with each My Document folder. Having the SID as the magic key, you can make a registry edit to reconcile the two folders. I stress again, this is decidedly non-trivial use of the XP registry editor: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/userpath.htm

    Arie,
Used "Remove Shared Documents Folder from My Computer" worked like a charm. Thanks to every one for your great help.
