It's been a while since I started the thread below. It expired after 60 days so I copied the revelant parts and need to continue with my dilemma. Please reread the following and at the end I will pick up with my post.

I have a strange problem with Netscape 7.2. Something happened a couple of months ago with all my stored email information. It used to always be stored in Netscape's original setup Profiles/default/mx2jz8e8.slt/Mail located in C/Documents and Settings/Skeet F/Application Data/Mozilla and I was always able to copy Profiles from it for a backup of all my filed and saved emails.

Now, since the "happening" (I think it had something to do with my main email service changing it’s Server Name under my Server Settings), I have another location where Netscape also stores a lot of my email information; it's in Profiles/skeetf @ ****.net/lpdsgjuj.slt/Mail located in C/WINDOWS/Application Data/Mozilla/.

Netscape uses both areas to store information; my email files appear to be current in the C/WINDOWS/…./Mail folder and all Netscape’s small files seem to be current in the C/Documents and Settings/…./Profiles/default/mx2jz8e8.slt folder.

I would like to get a single folder again with all my information and to be able to save backup copies of only one Profiles folder. If I can get this fixed then I’m going to look in to Foxfire!

    Thanks for any help,

    SkeetF

Firefox (not foxfire) is a browser only, but it goes with Thunderbird which is mail only. You could install TB, and select the settings for the profile which you want.
But, in any event a new .slt folder should have not shown up, unless you created it. It is obvious from the name that this happened. You should be able to get as many accounts that you want in a single profile. Now, if the server has been changed, you would need to create a new account. The old account would be inactive, unless there ia forwarding service between the two.
But, if your old account is finished, you should be able to copy its Inbox, after renaming it, and paste it into the new account folder. Everything would be in one place.
Is this what you want? Or did I miss something?

Thanks for the reply. During an email session the original *.slt folder is full of Netscape files and some of them are updated. The newer *.slt file contains no files at all only folders. One of the folders is Mail and contains apparently all the email files I am using and is always updated.

If I understand you, since both Profile folders are active during an email session I'm not going to be able to have a single working Profile file by copying parts one to the other. That's the reason to start a new account?

My Inbox is emptied at each session so I don't understand the renaming and copying remark of yours. Doesn't setting up a new account create an Inbox I can just use? I do have a lot of other email files I will need to copy to the new account.

Also, I noticed that after creating a new account, it is placed at the bottom of the Account Window. Since it's my main email is there anyway to to move it back to the top of the window?

    Thanks, SKEETF

    Skeet,

You can consolidate the two profiles.

First: Close Netscape, and make a backup copy of your Profiles folder

    Next:
Rename the Inbox file in the new Profile to Inbox2, the one which you describe with no files, and only folders.

Copy the renamed Inbox to the original Profile.

Open Netscape Mail, and highlight the renamed Inbox
    Press CTRL + A
    Right click the highlighted files
Select from the menu: Copy to
Select from that menu: Your original account's Inbox

Once you see that all the mail is intact, and you can access everything, then you can delete the renamed Inbox.

You can then delete the newer Profile folder, and have only your original Profile.

It appears that Netscape created a new Profile when you changed Servers (lpdsgjuj.slt). What is a bit confusing is that you show a Windows XP location for the mx2jz8e8.slt Profile, and then a Windows 98 Profile location for the lpdsgjuj.slt Profile? Do you have both Windows 98 and Windows XP installed?

If you want everything in the mx2jz8e8.slt Profile, then you can rename your Mail files, using Windows Explorer, in the lpdsgjuj.slt folder, and move them to the mx2jziei.slt Mail Account folder, e.g., Inbox2, Sent2, etc.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

I only have Windows XP PRO. My mail is spread out into two different locations in C:\.

    ...lpdsgjuj.slt....
    -Mail (This Mail is active)
    Local Folder (Inactive)
    mail.bellsouth-1.net (Inactive)
    - mail.bellsouth.net (Active)
    + Blue Dolphin Condo.sbd
    (Active)
    Saves.sbd (Active)

    The - mail.bellsouth.net contains 2 Folders:
    + Blue Dolphin Condo.sbd, Saves.sbd and 44 files; Inbox & Inbox.msf, Sent & Sent.msf....etc.
    The + Blue Dolphin Condo.sbd contains 2 Folders and 14 files; Dennis & Dennis.msf, Ivan & Ivan.msf...etc.

I already tried removing the - mx2jz8e8.slt folder and coping the lpdsgjuj.slt in its place. That didn't work. I tried removing the my original Mail folder and coping the newer Mail folder with all my important e-mails in its place. That also didn't work. I tried setting up a new account and copying my Mail folder over to it. That didn't work.

In my .....- mx2jz8e8.slt my Mail doesn't list all the different Folders I indicated above. How do I treat the renaming of these Folders and Files?

Ramona, I really appreciate you working with me on this confusing matter.
You also have a Happy Thanksgiving!

To clarify what Ramona said: C/Documents and Settings/…./Profiles/default/mx2jz8e8.slt folder. is a WindowsXP path, while
C/WINDOWS/Application Data/Mozilla/. is a Windows98 path, so, something must have been copied, incorrectly from Win98 to the present WinXP.
Ramona did not say this: I already tried removing the - mx2jz8e8.slt folder and coping the lpdsgjuj.slt in its place. . But she said this:you can rename your Mail files, using Windows Explorer, in the lpdsgjuj.slt folder, and move them to the mx2jziei.slt Mail Account folder, e.g., Inbox2, Sent2, etc.
In other words you were trying to copy the entire profile folder, when Ramona said to rename certain files in the mail account folder, so that they would not overwrite the present files. When you are done, you should have all the present WinXP mail, plus the old account mail. It does not matter if the old account mail is in the present mail account folder. The Inbox2, etc files will not spill over, nor get any new mail. Inbox2, etc. is a sort of archive file/folder.
.sbd folders are subfolders, and it is true in all cases, you will find files where the mail is stored, like Dennis and Dennis, etc. and the corresponding .msf or header file. Header files do not need to be copy/pasted, since new header files will be created. Local folders do not contain any actual mail, but rather Newsgroups mail (although in Thunderbird, and newer programs, one may find all mail in Local Folders, if not careful. .sbd folders can be copy/pasted in their entirety. All these operations must be done with Netscape closed, in Windows Explorer.

Thanks Ramona and Westside for all your help. I tried my best to follow your instructions but could not get Netscape to quit wanting to use the the wrong area.

I found an easier way to fix my problem after all this time and conversation. 1) I saved my MAIL folder which was in the wrong section and had all my active e-mail, 2) totally deleted my account, 3) removed all the files left over w/ Windows Explorer, 4) reinstalled my account, 5) deleted all the files in the newly created MAIL folder and 6) copied all the files I'd saved. Now everything is back to normal in one place!!

    SKEETF :)

PS. I never had Windows 98 on this computer.
