I have connected a UPS to my Windows XP-Media Center machine via USB. When I try to configure it, the only port that it allows me to select is COM3. The device manager recognizes it on the USB controller so why does the power options configuration window not see it or let me chose that port? TIA.

Did you install the software that came with the UPS?
The native service only recognizes COM ports.
It is possible the UPS software emulates a COM3 port and should be used.

Thanks for the reply. The software that came with the UPS does not support XP-Media Center (none planned). I was hoping to use the native options. I'm surprised you say it only supports COM3. I also have an XP-Pro machine and the native service works just fine with USB on that machine (I'm not using the supplied software there either because it does not give me the shutdown options I need).

I was not attempting to state it only works as COM3.
Only to check to see if an emulated COM port was their approach to UPC support with the native APIs.

It appears not. After setting up the configuration, I get an error that it cannot detect any devices. Thanks but it looks like I'm stuck unless someone can pull a rabbit out of a hat. At least it will carry me through short interruptions.
