    In XP you use:

    rmdir /s

to remove directories and their contents.

    rmdir /?

    gives usage information about rmdir.

The complete XP command line reference is included in Start>Help as well.
What folders do you want to delete? Some cannot be deleted unless explorer.exe is killed.

TonyT's comment reminded me of on of my favorite tricks:

On your desktop create a New Shortcut. In the first prompt from the New Shortcut Wizard, type:
    %Windir%\Help\ntcmds.chm

And voila, a complete XP Command reference on your desktop.

Bill, I think that trick works for NT as you have given it but for XP you must change the target line to:

    %windir%\hh.exe ms-its:C:\WINDOWS\Help\ntcmds.chm::/ntcmds.htm

Apparently XP integrated the Command Reference List into the Help file somewhat further.

%Windir%\Help\ntcmds.chm works for me as a shortcut or from the Run dialog, opening the help pgm at command line reference main page (ntcmds_o.htm) in rt frame.

%windir%\hh.exe ms-its:C:\WINDOWS\Help\ntcmds.chm::/ntcmds.htm open the help pgm w/ the commands page (ntcmds.htm) opened in rt frame and the menu expanded in left frame.

    Works for me.
A while ago XP switched to compiled .CHM files.

Make sure you have the latest XP Windows Help Support files installed.
This issue (and a link to the Help Support file Update) is discussed in this MS KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=312456

Perhaps it's a Pro versus Home thing. I'm running XP Home w/updates. I don't get any error using the %Windir%\Help\ntcmds.chm script for the target, just a screen with a notice that says:

The topics in this Help file are integrated into Help and Support Center. To view these topics, click Start, and then click Help and Support.

Bill, it appears that the link offered by MS was only for Win9x users since it advises XP users to rely on the Service Pacs for handling this problem.

But to clarify, it's not really a problem for me (no error message) and since using the extended script renders the correct performance I thought I'd toss it in for any others that it may help. It's a nice command line reference for XP and quite complete.

It actually links to Windows Update.

I gave the link as an explanation of the difference between the older Help support files and the newer ones to be used with compiled CHM files.

    Consider running MJ's Help Diagnostics:
