Hello & I only hope I can figure some of this out. I've been able to share my Internet connections before on my PC's. I have an old (2002) I think I bought it.
Wireless Belkin Cable/Dsl Gateway Router, model # F5D6230-3 with the Belkin Wireless USB Network Adapter ,Model# F5D6050. I have all my manuals and I'm going to try to just follow directions to start a home network. I have no software CD though, looked everywhere. Don't I need some Router Firmware or something, will that have the drivers for the USB Network Adapter that I'm using on the other PC. The Dell with XP SP2 Pro will be where I have my Modem & router on...My HP with XP Home is the PC with the Network adapter in it or on top of its desk. So sorry for the rambling on  I'm just freaking out here...Looking for software, can't see it on Belkins site.
    Thank You,,Paul

The ONLY software you need is a driver for the usb wifi adapter, which can be downloaded from the manufacturer web site. The router alrerady has firmware installed, no real need to update that firmware.

    Setup of Belkin Wireless Router

    Paul,

    the setup is fairly straightforeward.
    No software is required.
You set up the router through a web based interface accessed by your browser ( Internet Explorer or Firefox depending on what you prefer).

Ensure that the proxy server setting is unchecked
You may want to set the router back to factory defaults is it has been used elsewhere before just to start from a baseline.
    Type this into the browser

    http://192.168.2.1

    a setup console will emerge
    password is blank
    Enter the setup console
You will have to choose connection type- dsl if it allows that name or ppe
You will have to enter you dsl account name and isp password which may be diffirent than your email password.
If you do not have the info contact your isp.
You may have to tell the device to connect .
You may have to disconnect the dsl router from its power source after setup to have it reset.

    Full instructions are here:

My experience has been exactly the opposite of this. You have to regularly update firmeware as issues are resolved. Router firmware for SOHO class routers has to be some of the worst written stuff in computerdom.

Okay everyone,,I have the Router working and the main PC working by getting the Internet. I did follow the directions but when I put the Wireless USB Network Adapter in the PC I want to share the wireless Internet I can't get the new Hardware to install any software . No shared Internet yet on my other PC..I'm having a hard time explaining what I need. I have my Cable Modem hooked up to the Router in the Internet/WAN plug. I have the other cable from the PC to the #1Lan. All the lights seem to be working. The "Ready-W Lan-and the Wan" On the other group LAN #1 link light is on but not the Activity light under it.You all were helpful & encouraging,,thank you
    Paul...

    Networking is "Vodoo Science ".
In a lot of cases it seems that networking people are either to busy in their mind to bother to tell you or it may be that they just do not want to share privledged information.

I can't let that pass without comment.

I disagree. Networking is straightforward. Once you understand that decisions are made using fairly basic binary calculations, understanding how the systems works becomes a lot easier. Also the underlying protocols and device behaviours haven't changed much for years, so lessons learnt ten years ago are still relevant today. In the computing world that's a long time. Once you've mastered networking, it is fairly easy to maintain a high level of understanding. Even a buffoon like me can manage it.

Two factors add complication. Networks are no longer built on expensive kit, and unfortunately as the price has fallen, so too has the quality in some areas (see Bill's comments on Router firmware earlier in this thread). The way operating systems work with networks have become more complicated. Setting up systems to work on networks isn't any more difficult, but I find debugging problems has got more difficult - especially with XP Home.

I hope the amount of success the team here have with answering Networking problems, demonstrates that there is networking expertise being used successfully and willingly every day in this forum. You only have to look at the quality of the contributions of the likes of Bill and Tony to see that people with good networking knowledge are bothered and willing to share their knowledge.

Wouldn't it be nice to help out someone 1 of these days TonyT with a bit of my new knowledge  but a special thank you to you, TonyT, Visionof, Bill C,and ReggieB. I don't take enough time to seek out and thank the actual people that take their time in "tutoring" us. I'm not from the so called computer age (58Yrs old) but my favorite part of this wonderful thing we call the Web is the help forums like this one & the great friends I've made....Keep up the GREAT work!
    Happy Thanksgiving,
    ~Paul

    You are very welcome.
And you are not too old to learn either!
I just turned 50 last May, started w/ computers in 1998, but was taught the binary system in grammar school by an old teacher w/ good insight into the future who said, "someday the world will depend completely upon this new math ". I should have paid more attention back then and become an engineer or invested early on in IBM!.

Sharing knowledge & helping others is very rewarding because when the person helped "wins" then we win too. How many games are there where everybody wins? This is one of the few.

I am 74 and will echo the above 100%. And I may be out of line here but I am getting bored and need to get into something. Be it right, wrong, or indifferent.

I myself have 3 machines. 2 9SE and this XP. I am on Cable Internet. Each machine is 100% independent of the other.
It does take the proper model Printer but my HP Deskjet 5550 Printer is also plugged into the Router and can be used by any machine regardlesss of the status of the others. It was installed on one machines at a time with the other 2 shut down. This further assurred me that it would be stand-a-lone for each machines.
I may be thinking worng but I do not really consider it ( the printer ) as being shrared. At least not the same if it were connected only to this machine and the others had to go through here to use it. And it would not work if this machine were not on.

Time to refill the coffe cup. Be back later.

I was just looking this over and see that I made a mistake about the Printer Model.

    It should be HP5850

    BB
