I am using WinXP Pro with SP2 and all updates.Mother board is ABIT NFT-s2g.
All was working properly for over a year until about a week ago. Then, I noticed, suddenly, that the sounds were not coming through.
Volume controls disappeared from the task bar and nowhere can I find the original volume control panel.
Device manager shows no conflicts and all drivers are shown as working ok.
Control panel<sounds, etc shows "no sound device installed ".
Attempts to play music on CD drive goes to Windows Media Player and says "can't play due to sound device problems ".
All other features, so far, seem to be working flawlessly.
Does any one have an idea what happened?

shaprp - Welcome to the Board :)
What is shown in Device Manager under Sound, Video and Game Controllers? The indication that 'This device is working properly' should not be relied upon.

Do you have an onboard sound chip or a plug in sound card?

If there are audio devices shown in Device Manager remove them (Right click on item > Remove/uninstall) and reboot to allow Windows to reinstall them.

If this fails I suggest you reload the sound drivers.

    Hello Shaprp,
I had the same problem on mycomputer with the sound not working properly but I ended up getting the problem fixed. :) I ended up reloading all the sound drivers for my computer but nothing happened. :( Aslo in control panel under sounds and Audio devices its all grayed out so you can't change any sound options. So how I ended up fixing the problem was I went into the BIOS and I went under Integrated Peripherals and I enabled my sound device, restarted my computer and my sound worked again. :D

What I would suggest you do is to first try to reload your sound drivers for your sound card. If that doesn't work go into the BIOS and under Integrated Peripherals enable your sound. It should fix the problem. :)

Thanks for the two responses to my audio problem.
I had already tried the suggesrions and hoped for more. No luck!
I now have Microsoft interested and will relay any good results.

Friends do not let Friends allow Windows Update to install Device Drivers.

    You might try Driver Scan:
    http://driveragent.com/?ref=165

Windows Update constantly tries to replace my SiS chipset sound device with AC97 sound drivers. If you let that happen there will be no sound.

The first thing to try is Driver Rollback, an XP feature.

As to your volume icon, this is likely related to the driver issue. But please check:

    Then check: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;319095
