I'm a little bit confused as to which version of XP would be best to install on my core 2 duo system.

Is normal 32bit XP Pro SP2 good, or do I need the 64bit version..

Annoyingly a friend introduced me to this confusion..
Can someone clear this up for me?

In all honesty, I don't think anyone needs the 64bit version. It's just an option. It may improve performance in some apps but I'm not really sure.

I think the best way to put it is this.... if you were not even aware of this option to begin with, then, if I may be so bold, you are most likely not the type of "computerist" who should go with it.

Using the 64-bit version requires a bit more expertise and a bit more hands-on. The "profile" of the 64-bit user is an experienced PC user who doesn't mind moving a bit to the edge and dealing with some issues to get things working correctly.

I'm an experienced PC user but personally, I wouldn't touch it. I need my PC to work perfectly as soon as I turn it on - like a household appliance and I don't have the time or desire to deal with something that might need a bit more hand-holding. I hear that support for 64-bit has been constantly improving but I need to stick to mainstream stuff so that everything works for me just as it should.

Also to note is that if you install the 64-bit Windows XP you will not be able to upgrade it to the 64-bit Windows Vista.

They aren't compatible, you'd have to do a clean install

while i love vista.. i dont think ill be switching to it in the near future..

I'll let it mature a while as a lot of the apps i use daily refuse to install under it.

Also going to wait until the dx10 graphics cards are firmly on the market..
