hello, today my hard disk error, so I try use MADBOOT 8.0 to checking.

First, in BIOS I can see my harddisk
Chanel Hard Disk Status Size(MB) Mode
    Primany M Maxtor... Single Disk 38166 UDMA4

But when BOOT form CD, type this command

    (A) "FDISK /STATUS"
    Fixed Disk Drive Status

    Disk Drv Mbytes Free Usage
    1 38162 38162 %

    (1 MByue = 1048576 bytes)

    MADBOOT I:\>_

    (B) But use "FDISK /MBR"

The master boot code has NOT been updated.

    (C) and Use "GDISK /STATUS"

Disk Partitions Cylinders Heads Seckers Mbytes
    No fixed disks installed

What wrong ? FDISK is not equal GDISK ?
is my harddisk is error ? but BIOS can get my harddisk VOLUME,DATA...

I sure Last BOOT windows XP is good status, but NOW...all files is can not backup ? (files died ? )

The simplest way to backup data before everything is lost is to attach the faulty hard disk into another working computer and copy data onto some other hard disk. After your data is saved, you can run any number of utilities to find out whats wrong with your drive.

To use fdisk on an xp drive w/ ntfs file system you must first delete the non-dos partitions and then format. I'm not sure gdisk works on ntfs either. Gdisk is a Norton disk utility. If you want to format, boot using thje xp install cd and format it ntfs.

    Use this:
    http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/M...tware Downloads/ATA Hard Drives&downloadID=57
but do not install E-Z Bios.

If you want to do a low-level (zero) format, get the Powermax utilities. Afterwards, you will need to use Maxblast to partition and format the drive. Powermax also has testing utilities.

If you do not have any data to lose, do not worry about making a mistake, just start again.

Disconnect the cables for any other HDDs, just in case the wrong hard drive is selected for formatting.

No! It should be OK. The Maxblast utility might be the only thing that can "see" it though.

    A) Yes, on old computers it was Low Level Format, what it does is write zeros to the disk, so it is now called Zero Format.

B),C) Quick is to write zeros to the Boot Sector. The boot sector holds the information about the drive's partitions, the formatting/file system, etc. Full writes zeros on every part of the disk.
You could try Quick before you tried Full, you may be able to save all your data. If you use Full, every piece of data will be lost/overwritten.

You did a low level format so there is nothing to tell the BIOS about the drive. You need to build a new Boot Sector and Master Boot Record. I have only done this using the HDD utilities (Maxblast).

    D) Quick will probably be less than 1 minute. Full may be several hours.

    E) Maxblast will have a "Drive Information" selection. If the drive is listed there then it should be OK and you will need to use the different utilities to rebuild the Boot Sector (long time ago for me  ). If you only have that one HDD connected and it is "dead ", Maxblast will say there are no drives on the system. If you are not completely certain check for information about Maxblast at the Maxtor website and also get the Powermax utilities.

If I have not explained things very well you can get more information about boot sectors, partitions, zero format, etc, here:

You use the left-hand pane to navigate.

    Here are some steps:
    Download Maxblast 4.
Run the download in Windows and create the bootable floppy disk.
Put the boot floppy disk into the floppy drive of the computer with the drive you want to repair. Start the computer.
The Maxblast program will start to load, it will ask "Boot to floppy or CD? [F/C] ". Type F.
You will see the Maxtor splash screen. Then you will need to click "Accept" (the agreement).
    * At this point it will scan for drives, if the drive does no longer work, you will get a message saying there were no drives found, although you should still try running the Powermax utility.

Go to the option Set Up Your Hard Disk.
All the drives will listed, click on the drive and follow the prompts.

If you cannot run that set up, go to the selection Maintenance Options.
    Select Update MBR Boot Code.
(you could try Backup or Restore MBR, but I doubt they will work).
If Update MBR Boot Code works, then the drive may be repaired, otherwise run Set Up Your Hard Disk.

When the drive is set up, make a backup of the MBR.
