    I use IE6 on BT broadband in the UK. Sometimes, after an update, my Outlook Express has been replaced with Outlook.

    How can I stop this from happening?

    If you click on you OE icon does Outlook come up or does Outlook come up when you click on a link some where?

    The OE icon is removed altogether from my desktop and start menu and replaced with the Outlook icon.

    To get it back I have to go into my program files and find OE and click on it, then delete the Outlook icon from my desktop and start menu.

    This seems to occur when you update Outlook or the Outlook Junk Mail Defs - solution is ....

    Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Programs and reset OE to the default emailer.

    Thanks. OE actually is always set as the default mail program. I set it up as that when first setting up my broadband (I hate Yahoo mail) and that's how it is set up now.

    When I went into my program files earlier to replace Outlook with OE a window came up asking whether I wanted to use OE as my default mailer so it seems as though the update changes the default mailer setting - how I can stop it from doing that I don't know. I can't screen the updates as I have them on auto and an MS update can come at any time.

    If you do not use Outlook then uninstall it or alternatively set Automatic Updates to Notify and decline and hide those relating to Outlook.

    For future reference:
    • Open Outlook and go to Tools>Options>Other and uncheck the box to make Outlook the default mail program.;
    • Open Outlook Express and open Tools, Options, General tab, and at the bottom be sure to click the box to set OE as the default Mail Handler if it is not already set;
    • Then go to Control Panel, Internet Options, Program tab, and set Outlook Express as the default Email handler;
    • Then go to Control Panels>Add or Remove Programs>Set Program Access and Defaults, and click the Microsoft Programs radio button. Under the Email section select Outlook Express as the default.
    • Reboot.
    You need do nothing special about Windows Update.
