My 2001 Packard Bell DVD-Rom Drive stopped playing any type of discs & it only ejects after selecting Q Drive in My Computer & repeatedly selecting eject this disc. I thought it must be a software problem, seeing as it states that my drive is enabled & working properly in device manager. There is no option there to uninstall driver, only to uninstall device or rollback driver. I have tried updating drivers, but none can be found on the internet. My drive is: HL-DT-ST DVD ROM GDR 8160B. I have a programme called Smart Restore, a Packard Bell Programme that lets you reinstall faulty hardware or software, the problem is my DVD-Rom is not on the list there & even if it was it would ask me to play the installation disc, which must be played on that Q drive. I have all my reboot informatoin on three C.D.'s now, which contains Windows XP with Packard Bell programmes mixed in. I have SP2 installed now. I have tried going through the analysis of; my drive is not working properly, but it leads me nowhere. Is there any way I could revive my ageing drive or do you think it has had its day? I have alredy had to replace my C.D. writer drive, some time ago. I thought I had a malware, but TeMerc, a member of your staff, says my system is not infected, it is part of the Packard Bell operating system (see Persistent P Skill E Tool Malware & delcab virus). Any ideas anyone? Thank you.

I'd guess you got your money's worth out of this five year old drive....

But, one little spec of dust could cause it to malfunction....You can get a cd drive cleaning kit for about $8.00 USD.....Few more dollars will get you a new drive...

Thanks for your comment Steve, I thought this might be the case, drives don't last very long I suppose, like most computer hardware. It is also the speed they become outdated too.

thanks for your comment visionof. I have not touched the jumpers & it has been ok since 2001, so I assume they are in right position. Thanks anyway. Any comments are worth thinking about.

"Uninstall device" is uninstalling the drivers. Try that, it will be automatically reinstalled when you reboot.

The final test is to connect it into another computer, that will tell you if the problem is in your computer or the OS.

Re: my DVD-ROM won't play any discs.

Thanks for your comments Matt. I managed to disable my drive, by right clicking on the drive, in device manager & selecting disable. I then enabled the drive, but no difference. I am a bit dubious about uninstalling device, having never done this before, my concern being you would have to reinstall the drive from Packard Bell Smart Restore Programme, which would ask me to insert installation C.D. into the drive that is not working. As far as I know the drivers would not install automatically on restart, but you have more experience than me on such matters. Thanks again for your help Matt.

If you have a boot CD try booting to that (the restore disk?). If it runs outside of Windows then the problem will be one with Windows and it's drivers.

Here's one option that won't involve uninstalling.
Open the case and disconnect the cables to the drive. Leave it disconnected through several restarts. It may "reset" when you connect it again. Check that the cables are fully seated.

CD drives go bad sometimes. I bought 2 MADDOG DVDRW/CDRW for 2 kids's systems. One went bad in 6 months. The other is still working fine. Just last week I picked up a DVDRW-CDRW drive for 39 bucks as a spare.

My daughter got 5 yrs of use out of that drive in 6 months! She must have ripped several hundred cds and burned twice as many as that, not to mention the 1000 or so coasters!
