laptop blank screen

Hi, has any one any ideas on what might cause a laptop screen to go blank.
I can just about make out the icons on the screen but there is no light behind, its like looking at the screen with contrast turned down.

I can only suggest looking at the FAQs at the manufacturer's website.

Pete's suggestion about the backlight might be worth running a Google search on "backlight" and seeing if similar symptoms show up.

Some manufacturers offer in-depth repair manuals.
Depending on it's current worth you may want to cost a replacement part, set aside quite a few hours and tackle it yourself. I suppose if you got stuck at some stage you could take it to a service shop, get the part replaced then put it back together yourself.
