I installed IE7 , and rebooted twice. At first I didn't like it, but after discovering how to get rid of the e-bay and Yahoo rubbish which took up so much screen real-estate , I appreciated the extra space and also value the anti-phishing etc securioty features. I found out how to turn them on and tried out the various things IE& will do , clicking on the different icons . One of them gave me a whole blank page - apart from the advert for the computer maker who supplied the machine ( which also appears on my home page). And when I say blank I mean blank - no address bar, no tool bar, no menu bar, nothing except for "done" in the bottom lh corner . and a sizing menu elsewhere.
The problem is that I can't get back from there to the ordinary page. Re-booting does not help, it simply reboots in the blank page version .
I have now uninstalled IE 7 in order to get an internet facility on this PC , and I suppose I could re-install and try again , but I recall that it was a slow download and install operation , and unless sight of the page when it comes up reminds me of which button I pressed to produce the unwanted result , I may have to do it all again , and again, and.....

And I wonder if it is actually worth it ?

Start, Run, Regedit and remove the following registry key values which are most likely corrupt. (Do not delete the entire key, just the bolded word which will appear in the right hand panel.):

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\
    window_placement

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\OldWorkAreas\
    OldWorkAreaRects

Then download this from MS-MVP Doug Knox, unzip, and double-click to run:
    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/XP_ToolbarFix.zip

    Then reboot.

  3. to hide this advert.

I followed your instructions and all works fine now - although I have not gone looking for buttons to press !
One thing - I tried to use the Windows XP 64 bit download (to suit my PC) but each time (3 times), after downloading and before starting to instal ,an error message flashed on my screen about a bad file name and then the error message and the download etc all disappeared from my sscreen , so in the end I used the standard download - which is the one which seems to be OK.

    Thanks for your help.

The 64 bit download will only install on Windows XP Professional x64 edition, not on a normal 32-bit version (which is the one I'm guessing you have).

Internet Explorer 7 irreversibly goes blank.

You just guessed wrong. I have a 64 bit computer and Windows XP Pr 64 bit version installed. That's why I tried to download that version of IE7, but.....

Iguess there are still glitches in the sysyem even if it has gone gold !

Another question - maybe iy should be another thread ?

One of the tricks I early learnt , was that when the Internet went slow, go to Tools , delete cookies, delate files etc. If I had been doing a lot of browsing that could take a long time, and I could see why ythings went slow despite a PC with quite a good spec .

But when I look in IE 7 , I can't see the equivalent or same things at all ?
have they changed the name or put these tools somewhere else ?

It's the first item under the Tools button on the Command Bar (Delete Browsing History.

 Yea, true, in the case that I thought the error message is different. You probably got a corrupted or incomplete download.

I'd try deleting your TIF files & try re-downloading the X64 version.

You just lost me, with TIF files. Is this a termination ? Or some abbreviation for the whole of IE 7 ? ( The only TIF I know is Tagged image file format in digital photography , and I don't think that's meant ).

Please explain which files I should dlete before re-running the download ?

    Temporary Internet Files

What you can clear under Browser History.
