I have Automatic updates selected for my Windows XP Pro. 64 bit version, and until recently this has worked. Now it has stopped working and on investigation I get error message 0x80070643.
I read it, but do not understand what I have to do .
This is a single PC ( home usage) with only one user ( myself).
Anmy help will be appreciated - I now have something like 10 Security updates which download every night when I attempt to turn the machine off, and they don't instal.
I wonder if a restore , going back a month or so, might be an easy option ?

I can't even access the Windows Update site! Finally I managed to and it said it was checking my 'puter for updates and after 10 minutes of 'checking' it became obvious it wasn't going to happen. I suspect our problems are related:

    XP Pro, SP2

Geoff - Welcome to the Board :)

The most likely cause of the inability of Windows to install critical updates is a corrupt catalogue file as referenced here .....

    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.c...ading/Installing a Software (Non-Driver) item

Click on 'Problem Downloading/Installing a Software (Non-Driver) item'

and then on 'Updates fail to install and you receive error message 0x80070643' from which ....
I would try that fix and then access Microsoft Update directly through Start > Microsoft (Windows) Update and let you computer be scanned for required updates and then install them.

Your idea of a System Restore is workable, but I would try the fix above first.

    Windows updates won't instal

    I looked in C:\WINDOWS\System32\CatRoot2 but dont find edb.log . I have two folders there - {127D0A1D- etce etc..} and {F750E6C3- etc etc ...}
I also have dberr , edb , and maybe 50 ( have not counted ) edb files each with a series of characters following , ALL having no file termination , and then one with a termination - edb.chk
( and for completeness, the folder also contains res1` and res2 .

So corruption here does seem to be the problem.

How do I get the correct files ? I don't understand "renaming" - do I just select a certain file or files ( which ? ) and right click etc... ?

In Windows Explorer click on Tools > Folder Options > View and uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types' - this will reveal the .log extensions.

Right click on edb.log > Rename - I suggest renaming it to edbold.log

    It turns out that in CatRoot2 I don't have a sub-folder called edb.log.
Those 50 or so files which I mentioned earlier , e..g. edb006AO are ALL suffixed .log ( edb006A0.log for example).

Do I rename them all,i.e. every file or folder which starts edb ? or make a subfolder with the new name ? or what ?

BTW , on the way to CatRoot2 , in C:\WINDOWS itself, I notice a whole series - maybe 120 - folders all shown in blue instead of black and named $NtUninstallKB883939$ for example , which ( maybe ?) have been created by my unsuccessful attempts to install, and I wondered whether they should be deleted ? ( My overzealously tidy mind...)

That is strange and probably the cause of your problems. edg.log is a file, not a folder BTW.
No - follow the instructions here ....

You cannot install some updates or programs

Starting at Method 2 - check that the Cryptographic Service is running. If it was not running and you need to start it as described then visit Microsoft Update again and try to download the updates.

If the Cryptographic Service was running move on to Method 3 - Rename the Catroot2 folder and try the updates again through Microsoft Update. Note the rider at the foot of Method 2 ....

If the updates fail to install post back before proceeding to Method 4, etc.

The files you see in Blue are compressed files, shown only when Tools > Folder Options > View - Show hidden files and folders are selected. Those that you reference are the uninstall files for the hotfixes/patches downloaded from Microsoft Update which may be uninstalled - not all updates can be uninstalled. Leave them alone - they are safe to delete, but only if you are 100% sure that you will never want to uninstall a particular hotfix/patch. Play safe - leave 'em alone :)

:( - we will move on then to Method 4. To save you time .....

Copy and paste the following into Notepad ....

    regsvr32 /u softpub.dll
    regsvr32 /u wintrust.dll
    regsvr32 /u initpki.dll
    regsvr32 /u dssenh.dll
    regsvr32 /u rsaenh.dll
    regsvr32 /u gpkcsp.dll
    regsvr32 /u sccbase.dll
    regsvr32 /u slbcsp.dll
    regsvr32 /u mssip32.dll
    regsvr32 /u cryptdlg.dll
    exit

    and save as Unregister_CS.cmd

Do the same for the following ....

    regsvr32 softpub.dll
    regsvr32 wintrust.dll
    regsvr32 initpki.dll
    regsvr32 dssenh.dll
    regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
    regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
    regsvr32 sccbase.dll
    regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
    regsvr32 mssip32.dll
    regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
    exit

    and save as Register_CS.cmd

Navigate to Unregister_CS.cmd and double click on it to run. Click on OK if you are prompted.

    Reboot the computer

Navigate to Register_CS.cmd and double click on it to run. Click on OK if you are prompted.

    Then try the updates again.

BTW do you have detail of the Updates which fail to install, e.g. KB923191

    Windows updates won't instal

I'm half way through this and feeling nervous...
This message being sent from a different machine ( my laptop).

I have done the Unregister and reboot - then got error messages about this version of Windows is counterfeit ( which of course it isn't) , and "Application failed to initialize. A problem caused Windows Defender Service to stop . To start the service, restart your computer or... "

I did reboot , got "Application failed to initialize 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender to stop. "

However I went on and tried the updates again.
The 9 are all Security updates :-
    for Powerpoint 2003 KB923091
    for Office 2003 KB924424
    forn Excel 2003 KB923088
    for Office 2003 KB923272
    for Word 2003 KB923094
    for Office 2003 KB923097
for Outlook Junk Mail filter KB923095
    for Publisher 2003 KB894542
    for Officew 2203 KB914455

All 9 failed . I checked , and the error message is the same as before - 0x80070643

I rebooted to see what error messages , if any I got - since I have run the Register file since getting the ones mentioned above , and again got the This copy of Windows is counterfeit" but I clicked on "resolve later" and have not had a re-run of the further error messages .
I tried the installation again , before sending this, after the reboot, but again all failed.

I am not sure why the Windows Validation check has failed and you are now seeing the 'This copy of Windows is counterfeit' message.

I think you should restore the system to the most recent date prior to this incident and see if that resolves that issue.

I should have asked which updates were failing to install earlier :( - you are not the only one with such problems ....

    http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/99609816/m/293008371831

It seems that the only solution found here was an uninstall and re-install of Office.

    Windows updates won't instal

Restore seems to have cured the "counterfeit" problem.

I then tried to uninstall Office - using Control Panel/Add/Remove programs , and - after selecting Office ,got the message that an installation is in progress and that should be finished before attempting another .
Not sure what to do from here ?

Glad to hear you are 'Geniune' again - that was unexpected :)

I think the Windows Installer is confused or maybe corrupted - I suggest you download and run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility - the download link is towards the bottom of the page above the Readme file.

Choose the Office programs from the list (screenshot).

Do you have Windows Installer 3.1 installed? It would help if you did: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898715

Have you followed the steps in this MS KB article?
When you try to install the security update that security bulletin MS06-033 describes (917283) on a computer that is running the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, the computer may stop responding or you may receive the

following error code: 0x643 - Applies to update KB922770 also.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100

Have you seen and tried the steps discussed in these articles?
Have you submitted the problem using the automated Windows Update data collection tool? http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527

    Windows updates won't install

I removed Office 2003, then re-installed it. When asked, I requested updates etc, which I thought might have included the nine I have had difficulty with and downloaded and insytalled what was offered ( but the ones in question did not seem to be there ) ; subsequently I went to Windows updater and checked for updates available for my system, and found the nine listed. I downloaded and - wait for it - installed them SUCCESSFULLY.

    Many thanks Pete.

Also thanks to other contributors, notably Bill - I followed Pete because I thought I might confused if following two different lines of advice at the same time, but thanks anyway.

I have been unable to install these updates.

Security Update for Windows XP (KB920213)

Security Update for Windows XP (KB923980)

Security Update for Windows XP (KB924270)

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB922760)

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - November 2006 (KB890830).

Ive tried renaming the file in the catroot2 folder but was unable as it tells me that it was unable to rename the file due to it being used by another source.

Tried the second suggestion and there wa no luck there either.

Cant do the third one and the fourth suggestion, as the WUTEMP folder cant located on my computer.

    Any thoughts?

    Windows update will not instal

You might check and see if those updates are all Windows Office - as were the ones I was having difficulty with.
I am not sure whether any of the other things I did - as spelled out for me by Pete in my thread were essential steps along the way , or did not in fact contribute , but the success came after removing Ofice and then re-installing. I had to do the update offered at the end of the installation, then go to Microsoft updater to pick up the ones which had been the problem, and they then installed immediately.
I suggest that you might just go straight to this - if in fact it is the Office updates which are being troublesome.

No Geoff, these are updates for XP Home which were released today (15th Nov,Oz time) although there was one dvelopment in which after I logged off and restarted my machine,I was able to rename that file in the catroot32 folder then to my delight,I was able to install the updates so thanks for the advice which THAT got me on my way.

But in trying to turn on my system restore,it does nothing and freezes up the computer so I will have to look around the traps in here to see were I will be going from now in my quest to solve another P.I.T.A.(Pain In The A***E).:)
