Problems sharing "My documents" on a workgroup

I have two wireless computers on a workgroup at home. Both computers are mine and I often need access to all of my desktop files from my laptop over the wireless network.

The laptop has Windows Media Center 2005. Simple file sharing is disabled. I have a username (say Portable) with a password.

The desktop has Windows XP Pro SP2. Simple file sharing is disabled. NTFS is activated on the system drive (which contains My documents). The username on this computer is Leo and is password-protected. I have enabled file sharing for the "My documents" folder. I have created a user on this computer that has the same username and password as the laptop as explained in another thread in this forum. I have added this username in the sharing and security tabs of My documents. The sharing tab only contains Leo and Portable, the desktop and laptop usernames respectively. The security tab contains only System, Leo and Portable.

Locally, on the desktop, it is possible to swith the user and access Leo's My documents without any problem from the Portable account.

When using my laptop to browse the workgroup, I can see "My documents" on the desktop. When I try to click on it, is says that it is not accessible. "... is not accessible. You may not have permissions to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access denied. "

The only way I have been able to acces the desktop folder from my laptop is to add "network" as a user in the "security tab ". I believe that this allows anobody from the network (even the internet?) to acces the folder, which does not prevent unauthorized acces to my personnal files.

Am I missing something?

Yes. User profiles are nominally protected even from the Administrator.

You need to change the NTFS permissions as well as the Share permissions. You apparently have only done the latter.

Solution

I have found the problem.

To prevent username confusion between my laptop username and my desktop username, I had renamed the user account on my laptop to Portable using the "User accounts" tool of the Control panel. This does not change the username, but the "Full name" property of that username. On my desktop, I was therefore trying to give access to "Full name" (i.e. "Portable ") instead of the original username...

In case somebody runs into the same problem, the real username (and not the Full name which is seen when loging in Windows) can be visualized with the Computer management tool under System tools/Local users and Groups/Users.

 

Problem with workgroup

I have a PC with window professional and laptop with window home connected on a router by ethernet. AND I was able to see each other, but on my laptop I was able to look into the share files of my PC, but on my PC I was not able to look into the laptop, it first gave me a window that made me put a password to a guest and I when on the laptop to
control panel>Administrative tools>Computer Manager>Local Users and Groups
and then I enable the Guest account.

Which I though I was going to be able to see the Laptop Share files. But now I get:
" \\Eu is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.... Logon failure:the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer "

Did I miss to install some component in the Laptop or what?

Advanced file sharing (with usernames and passwords) only works under Windows XP professionnal (and media center edition). Windows Home edition only allows you to use simple file sharing. I hope this helps you.
