Greetings!
After recently uninstalling NIS and SysWrks 2005 (including NAV 2005) starting any program in the Office 2003 suite quickly, briefly flashes the Windows Installer dialog five times then goes away. This was longer-lived immediately after uninstalling the Symantec software and I could click thru the Browse button to see NAV.msie as the requested target. I manually searched my Registry and removed every reference to Norton AntiVirus I could find and am now left with this haunting by the 5 flashes of the installer dialog box. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office 2003 to no avail.
Any thoughts or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Correction!

Error in my first post:

"... see NAV.msie as the requested target... "

It should have read NAV.msi, the Windows Installer extension.

Sorry for the confusion.

Hello PeteC!

Thanks for your reply and kind welcoming!

Please clarify:

Run the Cleanup Utility on what program(s)? If you are advising to do so on the Norton software, I can confirm completing that and no traces remain.

Thanks for your help!

Best wishes!

Yes, that was the general idea :)

I take it that the flashing dialogue box remains as you have not indicated otherwise?

Although you have searched the Registry for references to Norton/Symantec I suggest you do so again using RegSeeker - ensure that the backup before deletion box is checked.

Hello from out of the recent past PeteC!

I have endeavored to chase down my problem's cause with no luck.

RegSeeker and other registry tools were tried. RegSeeker found:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU\0\2\2
108 N

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU\0\2\2\4
3 N

HKEY_USERS
S-1-5-21-1332141972-2764043822-2737350004-1005\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU\O\2\2
108 N

HKEY_USERS

3 N

These were removed but made no difference to the problem.

I have tried Rootkit Revealer, Blacklight and Sophos - no clearly labled Norton anything.

Knowledgebase searches at MS Office and Symantec were unproductive.

Uninstalls, reinstalls of Office 2003. I am at a loss. If you have any other suggestions I will most gratefully try them. I thank you again for your generous assistance.

Best wishes!

Thank you again PeteC for sharing that link to the experts' site! - I certainly don't qualify...!

I hadn't mentioned it, but, I do, indeed run Winfax Pro, and had uninstalled and reinstalled it, but had not run SymNRT. So I'll give that a go and report back.

I am leary of letting Symantec's web site on my system but found standalone downloads of SymNRT. Curiously one is listed as v. 2007.2.0.5 (@ 600kb) and the other is v. 2006.2.10.19 and has a fancy icon and weighs in @ 2,646KB. Both have 9/27/2006 as date.

Anyway, it is not so satisfying to see my issues have occurred on others' computers, but at least some have succeeded solving it!

Best wishes!

Hello at last PeteC!

My apologies for the delay, but, I am very happy to report your thread and link proved to be the exact right answer!

I uninstalled Winfax Pro and ran the new SymNRT, the standalone download of SymNRT, (listed as v. 2007.2.0.5, dated: 9/27/2006) worked.

Thank you again for your attention and help!

Best wishes!
