    Try Deep Burner Free, here:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads3.html
If it works, that will rule out a problem with the drive itself.

The only update for the drive will be a firmware update. Firmware updates should be available from the drive manufacturer's website. These usually allow more media to be recognized and may be what you need. Try different brands, I would suggest TDK, Imation or Verbatim.

They talk about Lightscribe software here:

If you have not uninstalled the previous burning software there may be a conflict.

May not help, but won't hurt. Boot into Safe Mode and uninstall any CD/DVD drives listed in Device Manager.

Check for FAQs at the Nero website.

If you have been able to burn DVD's before using that burner and Nero 6 AND you are still able to burn CD's then there may be a problem with the DVD laser in the burner.

Download a trial of Nero 7 - if your burner is recent Nero 6 may well not be recognising it as DVD capable.

You should be able to connect the drive into another computer that already runs DVD burning software. That would confirm if the laser heads are OK.
Edit: Then again, OEM burning software may be crippled against running on new drives.

It will be covered by 12 months manufacturer's warranty.

Unless we are speaking of a laptop why not an internal burner at less cost?

I have had no reason to choose external. Unless I had a special reason to use external I think I would always choose internal.

Oh, come on :) We all make simple mistakes from time to time - some more frequently than others, but it really would be helpful to anyone else with a similar problem to know.

We can't see you blushing :D

    OK
first U need to know I have a vision problem
Nero has these two almost invisable button on upper R corner they have colors that blend right into the background - they are DVD & CD and depending on which one is active gives you the type of media you can use
It's one of the shortcomings of Nero - not really so intuative
    there you go

    Many thanks for that.

I migrated from Nero 5.5 directly to 7 so would not have been familiar with that setting.
