    Hi.

Since a complete reinstall of my computer a month ago, I have not been able to connect to our home network. I've tried researching on the net myself, and I've also tried another forum, where the discussion just broke down.

I cannot see the other computers on "network places ", nor can they see me. Hence, no file sharing.

    This is my computer specs.

    HP Pavillion a700n computer
    2100 MgHtz
    60 G Hard drive
    Windows XP (SP2)
Connected to internet (dsl) through Linksys BESFR41 (wired)

2 Other Computers are currently set up on the network and working fine. One uses Windows XP, the other Windows 98.

Before my system crash, I was also hooked up to the network without problems.

I have pinged one of the computers (the one I'm using for testing my connection to it). The connections appears fine.

I have checked if the guest accounts were active, through Run > CMD > "set user guest ". They were on both computers.

In Administrative Tools > Services, I've also checked if the "computer browser" was set to automatic, which it is. I also changed a setting in one of the Services components that allowed me to se my own shared files on my computer. I don't remember which Service it was though. Before I did that, I could not see my own name/folders in my "Network Places ".

I've also tried Start > Run > \\(computer name or IP address)\SharedDocs. It doesn't work either.

This may be significant, I'm not sure. Running ipconfig on the second computer, I saw that it actually had 2 ip addresses listed. One for "Ethernet Adapter Local Area Network" And another one for "PPP Adapter BroadBand Connection ". I pinged them both. Only the PPP BroadBand Connection IP returned a reply.

Oh yeah. I have turned off my firewall during all this. Still no help.

Anyone got any ideas what I can try next? I'm really frustrated, and I backed up a ton of files on the test computer that I would like to get back without copying the to cd-rw all the time. he he

Obviously I have a moderate knowledge of computers, but please feel free to bring up obvious things or to assume I don't know something. My knowledge on this subject has real big holes.

Thank you, and take care all.

From the HP Pavillion a700n computer:

. ping the other two computers and report the results
    . Start, Run, CMD

net view <<===== report the error #
net view \\computer_one_name_or_ip <<==== report the error #
net view \\computer_two_name_or_ip <<==== report the error #
ipconfig /all <<=== report the output

    netsh diag gui
    (select all options and run)
    report back the results

    Here it is

Thank you very much for responding:

The information you requested is below. Just wanted to add some notes.

It seems that I can in fact connect to the third computer (Geroge, win98) on the network. I'm guessing I've done something previously that changed things, but don't ask me what.

The second computer that I've been trying to connect to (Eric, WinXP) still doesn't show up at all, and when I tried accessing George from Eric, the message "You do not have permission to access this computer" appeared. George shows up on the shared files of Eric, but not vice versa.

So I'm guessing the real problem here is computer Eric.

For clarity, my computer is called Chris (Win XP)

Here are the results you requested.

    Describe your hardware:

. Are you using a router? If so, make and model
. Are you instead using a Proxy Server like XP's native Internet Connection Sharing?

One issue is that you have computers on two different subnets, one of which is private and one of which is a public WAN interface.

We are connected to the internet and each other through a router. Linksys BESFR41 (wired)

I did notice that too, with the subnets, but don't know what I am supposed to do to fix that.

    Hardware specs:

    Chris (mine)

    HP Pavillion a700n computer
    AMD Athlon Processor
    2100 MgHtz
    60 G Hard drive
    Windows XP (SP2)
Connected to internet (dsl) through Linksys BESFR41 (wired)

    Eric (computer #2)

    Microstar International MS-7125 computer
    2010 MgHtz
    AMD Athlon processor
    150 GB Hard Drive
    Windows XP (SP2)

    George (computer #3)

    Dell Optiplex GX200
    Intel Pentium 2 Processor
    20 GB Hard Drive

Is someone using the native XP "dialer ", or perhaps a "dialer" type of applicatiion prior to trying to use the internet?

Sure looks like it from your ipconfig results:

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix.........no-domain-set.bellcanada
    Description............................VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet

    Adapter
    Physical Address.......................00-11-2F-DA-9F-D5
    Dhcp Enabled...........................YEs
    Autoconfiguration Enabled,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Yes
    IP Address.............................192.168.1.100

PPP adapter MY ISP: <<==== this should not be here!

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix.........
    Description............................WAN <PPP/SLIP> Interface
    Physical Address.......................00-53-45-00-00-00
    Dhcp Enabled...........................No
    IP Address.............................70.48.85.240
    Subnet Mask............................255.255.255.255
    Default Gateway........................67.69.184.20
    206.47.244.57

Your router is perfectly capable of handling the authentication and PPoE communication with your ISP. No additional dialer should be used. You configure the Linksys router for an always on PPoE connection, set your Ethernet adapters to obtain their IP address and DNS server addresses automaticly, and that is it.

    :)

I can't thank you enough!!! All computers are now connected and functioning properly with each other.

I'll be saving this page in case I ever need these instructions again.

You've been very patient and generous. Again, thanks!

    Take care! :)

    Having similar network problem

I have a home network consisting of two computers, both using WIN XP. They are connected directly to a wired router and can access the internet regardless of whether one or both are turned on. As well, they can see each other and share files and info.

The problem is my new laptop. It is also running XP and can be connected both wired and wireless. Because I don't have wireless capabilities at home, I have it wired to the router as well and have no trouble connecting to the internet.

But, no matter what I have tried, I am unable to see the other two computers on the network. I can ping them by ip address but can't connect to them by ip address or name. They can't see the laptop either. I have run all the necessary network wizard programs, they are all using the same workgroup name, the connections are all good, they are all sharing files, all the correct protocols, services and clients are installed and activated -- everything works except I can't access anyone. It's lonely over here.

I show three connections, wireless shows as not connected, LAN shows as connected and 1394 connection shows as connected.

What am I missing here people? I'm getting very frustrated. I have my firewalls all turned off. I need more suggestions. I've searched through many forums but haven't found anything that would help.

    Looking for any help,
    Susan

Break the 1394 connection. This is the firewire port and the Network wizard loves to bridge this.

Microsoft has written a Knowledge Base article on this issue: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823305&Product=winxp

By the way, you really should have started a new message with your question. I almost missed it as it is at the end of a very long and very much closed topic.

Always start fresh with a problem to get the most attention.

    Best regards.

Okay, I disabled the 1394 connection and I still have access to the internet but still no luck with the network. I can ping the others by ip address in the cmd screen but not with their computer name. Under Entire Network, my computer is the only one that shows up.

    Any other suggestions?

I appreciate any help you can give me.

    First,
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318030

    Second,

    1. Start, Run, regedit
    2. Locate and then double-click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
    3. In the right pane, double-click restrictanonymous.
    4. Make sure that the value in the Value data box is set to 0, and then click OK.
    5. Close Registry Editor.
    6. Restart the computer.

Value is set to 0 - I didn't have to change it.

    Now check your firewall settings.
Make sure there is an exception made for File and Printer Sharing.

    Then Start, Run, cmd

    net view
What is the error number and text?
    Do you see other workstations?

    net view other_workstation_name
What is the error number and text?

    netsh diag gui
    Enable all options and run.

What is shown as FAILED on the tests?

    Do an ipconfig /all >ipconfig.txt
    notepad ipconfig.txt

With your mouse copy the text you see.
    Close notepad.
    Type Exit

Now post back to the Forum:

    The results of your two Net View commands;
The failed results in Net diag
The ipconfig results you just copied

Well, in between all this, I've been reading as many posts that I can and I found a solution. I don't understand all of it but someone on another forum suggested that, in a similar situation, IPX protocol be installed. I figured, what the heck, and did it. And, voila, I am part of a network. I had to add IPX to all the computers but it works. Again, it's beyond my knowledge level as to why it works but at this point, I'm okay with that. I want to thank you for your help and time. Maybe this can help others as well.

    Gack!

    IPX is not a solution.

Go ahead, but even Novell does not use IPX anymore. And it is not available under Vista.

    (Nor is Netbui).
