Okay, first of all. Hi everyone haha..

    Now here's my question.

I'm running Windows XP Professional, SP2 (I believe) on an IBM Thinkpad T20 laptop computer. It had some kind of error a few days ago and has been running on a temporary profile ever since. I can't seem to get it to go back to normal. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Create a new user, a new profile, and copy the contents of your original profile to save time:

When you are pleased with the results, install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service by Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en

Finally, do a chkdsk on your system volume (the drive with WINDOWS installed). Open "My Computer ", right click your system volume, Properties. Click Tools, Error Correction, and check both boxes.

    Okay this works?

No offense to you, I'm just paranoid.

I can still access my regular documents I just have to go through My Computer and Documents and Settings to get to them. This is the solution to that problem?

Yes, it is the solution to your problem.

Note: All I have done is to recommend a copy of existing files and profile information.

There is nothing destructive in the steps I have outlined.

You just have to logon with a new username.

Okay thank you, I appreciate the help.

Just one more question. Once I do all that can it be put back to normal so when I get the windows welcome screen there's only one name or would I have to keep two there?

After you have completely tested the new username and profile, and are happy with the results, delete the old username and profile. You can do this in Control Panel, User Accounts.

Or in the alternative, hide the unwanted users from the welcome screen logon. Here is an explanation and a utility freeware to accomplish this goal: http://www.intelliadmin.com/blog/2006/09/hide-user-accounts-from-windows-xp.html

Okay great, thank you so much for your help. I've been having this issue for a while now and been trying to get help on different boards, and no one's known what to do, so thank you, it's much appreciated. :)
