I'm using an Acer Aspire 3004 laptop. After installing Firefox 2.0 I noticed that the center scroll button did not work with Firefox. I searched Mozilla and found out that this was true and the latest Acer Synaptics driver did not fix the problem. The FIX was to download and install a version from Dell. Well this did not work and now i cannot use the function anywhere. When I re-install the original one it goes thru a complete install but at the end it fails with the "Access Denied" prompt. How can I get back to the original driver?

Logon in Safe Mode as Administrator.

    Start, Run, devmgmt.msc

Right click on the touchpad device entry.
    Properties, Driver, Roll-back Driver.
You might have to roll back more than once.

Follow the instructions in the second post of this thread:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=59111

In addition, you should look in Task Manager to see if any instance (under the Processes tab) of the Synaptics driver is shown. (Sort the processes by name, and look for those beginning with Syn...., If found, highlight them and use the kill process button at bottom right of Task Manager.

    Now Start, Run, devmgmt.msc
Right click the Synaptic device, Properties, Drivers, Update drivers
Use the Have Disk option and point at your new set of drivers.

Thanks for the help but everything fails...after over two hours with both microsoft and acer i used the recovery disks...the naggs stopped and i'm able to update drivers and roll them back but even now the scroll button doesn't work! it seems unlikely that my first attempt at updating the drivers not only srewed up the OS but it somehow damaged the touchpads scroll button! anyway acer said to send them back the laptop and they will fix it under the warrantee...i've spent too much time on this problem! let them deal with it.
btw it ***** not having a stand alone copy of XP. there is no recovery console in the acer recovery disks and i had to re-install all the programs and files...just re-installing windows repair might have done the trick...
