    Hi,
I've got virus burst on my computer. I did try & follow the instructions from another thread, by running smitfraudfix, however, it hasn't worked. I didn't get a search option when running smitfraudfix.

Hello timeoutgang and welcome to the forum.

SmithFraudFix is pretty simple to use, but lets not get ahead of ourselves. Lets get a look at at a HJT logfile first please.

    Install as instructed below.

    HiJackThis v:1.99.1zip.
DL the zip file to your desktop, then create a new folder on your C drive, called 'HJT' or 'HijackThis'. Then unzip the files to the new folder. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

Run the program, and press Scan. You will notice the Scan button will turn into a "Save Log" button. Save the log and Post that log onto this topic. DO NOT DELETE or modify anything yet, as some of it is needed to keep your system in proper working order.

We can work from there once we have a better picture of what is on the system.

OK, well yes there certainly is a variant of SmithFraud on your system. I don't know what directions you followed, but I have so far not run into anyone having problems with the ones provided as they will be below.

Lets give these a shot please. If you have any troubles, please let me know. If you say there is no option in the menu for 'seach', please take a screen shot of it, so I can see exactly what it is showing.

    Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter "; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool "; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore you may get an alert.

    Step 2:

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site. Please follow the instructions exactly in the order listed; this is very important!

Please download, install, and update the free version of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 formerly Ewido Anti-Malware:
    1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu ".
    2. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found! ". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
    3. From the main Ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
    4. After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful "
    5. Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? "; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter ".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

AFTER SmitfraudFix finishes (and after a reboot if required), please open Ewido. (If a reboot is required, please boot BACK into Safe Mode.)
    • Click on Scanner
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "Remove" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop
    • Close Ewido
Then please restart it into Normal Windows. Please post the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt into this thread, along with the Ewido (please edit out all cookie Recycler and restore\system volume folder references) report and a new HijackThis log.

Darn-it, another one got by me, sorry for overlooking your reply.

OK, the log looks good, nothing remaining of the infection.

I do however see you have SpywareBot installed. This app is a rip off of the Spybot Search & Destroy name, very similar. I would uninstall it. There are many more reputable anti-spyware apps available.

Let me know if you're having any more troubles please.

    Excellent!
One last thing, how do I uninstall spywareBot? I've searched for it, however, when I try & delete it tells me "cannot delete file: cannot read from the source file or disk "

Try removing it in safe mode. Let me know if that does not work.

We have 3 more things to do, to help ensure you have removed all the little 'leftovers' which may be hiding:

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp folder
The app below will help with temp files.
    Index.dat Suite

Also, delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion.

Here is a link which describes how security apps work with WIN XP machines.
XP User Accts Security Apps Operation

To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL the apps below, which are just as good the fight against ad/mal/spyware as AdAware & Spybot S&D:

    SpywareBlaster
With SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 , just DL, install and check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using IE restricted sites protection as it's not a very large database. Use IE-SPYADs below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine install WinPatrol v10.0.5.

Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

Links for tutorials for all the apps I mentioned can be found on my site as well.

Confused about which apps are good or not? Read about Rogue/Approved Anti Security apps

And just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly. Keep track of updates for ALL your security needs here:
    Calendar of Updates

Subscribe to update alerts for all the above security apps here.

You can also see my own ongoing security testing with all the above apps proving how securely you can safe with them installed.

The only thing I see there is SpywareBot, which is essentially one of those apps trying to cash in on the name of 'Spybot Search & Destroy'. I'd recommend removing it.

    Beyond that, log looks fine.

Thanks very much for your help guys. Can't get rid of spywareBOT though. Tried in safe mode, still telling me the same thing about the source disk in my earlier post.

Ok, here are a couple of other methods to try.

Here is another way to Remove apps from Add/Remove

There also may be an uninstaller, you check with HJT:
    Start HijackThis
    • Click on the Config button
    • Click on the Misc Tools button
    • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button
    • Click the 'Uninstall command' box and see if there is an uninstaller, typically it is in one of the folders.

OK. I think I've removed it. How can I check if it's gone?

Do a registry search for SpywareBot, delete all references found reboot, see if HJT still finds it.

First lets back up your registry. This is just a precautionary step, and you can delete the saved file once we are done.
Click the 'Start' button, select 'Run', hit 'Enter'.

When box appears, type 'regedit', hit 'Enter'.

Once the editor has popped up, select 'Edit' from the toolbar, then select 'Find....' and type in SpywareBot....once found, right click each entry, select 'delete' and then go back to the toolbar>>Edit>>select 'Find Next' and keep deleting until no more entries are found.

I started doing this, but, some of the files don't seem to be associated with spyware bot. For example "C:\Program Files\McAfee.com\VSO\mcvsshld.exe "
    & "C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe "

    Shall I still delete these?

Ok, where does it say SpywareBot in those paths?

If SpywareBot is not in the registry portion, then do not delete it.
