Problem with IE icon on taskbar

My wife has a laptop only she uses. Yesterday she said her IE icon was missing from her taskbar. I right clicked the taskbar and selected toolbars, quick launch. The icon was back on the taskbar but the taskbar doubled in size to about 1 inch from the normal 1/2 inch measured from the bottom of the screen. I tried to drag it to normal size but that did not work. If we deselect quick launch we can drag it to normal size but once quick launch is selected again the size problem comes back. Right click and select to clear Lock the taskbar.
Re-enable Quick Launch.

Then resize the taskbar as you attempted earlier.
Finish by a Lock the Taskbar.

 

We checked and the taskbar is not locked. It is in auto hide mode and we have tried changing that and locking and unlocking the taskbar and nothing seems to help. When we get the double resizing arrow on top of the taskbar it will take the taskbar down to barely visible at the bottom of the desktop but will not resize it to normal size.

This should reset all sizing values.
