I manually deleted some of the redundant software clogging up my hard drive recently. However when I go to Control Panel>Add or remove programs the titles of 2 programs persists namely "Citrix ICA Web Client" (an application enabling me to access my previous work's email) and the Chess program "Perfect Chessmate ". I've performed full system file and folder searches for "ICA ", "Citrix" and "Chessmate" to see if anything pertinent is hiding anywhere and nothing has shown up. Where does "Add or remove programs" look for its program list when displaying the message "Please wait while list is being populated" and is it possible to modify this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    It looks in the Registry.
To clear invalid entries, see: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310750

Note: your method of clearing unused programs is generally unwise. If an entry exists in Add/Remove programs that should be your first choice.

The second choice is to look in the Program Files\directory_of_program to see if an uninstall routine has been placed there, or in one of the subdirectories.

Simply deleting the files involved leaves a lot of orphaned registry entries, and can cause problems if a startup program is involved.

Thanks Bill; worked like a charm

Thanks very much for your suggestion Bill, it worked nicely.

I've learned my lesson now and will uninstall programs properly from now on.

    Thanks again.
