    Hello,

I had a dualboot system on my laptop with XP and Suse (Linux). From within windows I deleted the Suse partition and redistributed the free space using Partition Magic. When I tried to reboot, my computer hung up at GRUB (the boot loader of Suse) and would not boot. It happened becuase I forgot to restore the windows boot loader before removing Suse :( . So now I did two things

    1. Tried to fix the previous installation of XP but it did not work since computer has to boot up during the process and would again hang up at GRUB.

    2. I used FIXMBR.

after using FIXMBR the previously halted XP installation process started but after it completed and I rebotted my computer I got a blue screen. Using safe mode the computer would hang on agp440.sys. I looked at Windows website and found the cure and disabled it. But then I got stuck at btkrnl.sys so I disabled that as well and then mup.sys and then ndis.sys and now I am at ntfs.sys  . Don't know what to do other than formatting my hard disk which I don't want to do at the moment. Please help!

Suspect the problem was created with PM some how.
    things to try:
    1) from Recvoery console run CHKDSK
    2) from DOS bootup run TESTDISK , will check for error in the VBR (volume boot record) and partition table.
    http://www.cgsecurity.org/index.html?testdisk.html
    3) run PM again, does it give an error while loading ?

What version of PM did you use ?
Was the XP partition the very first one or did you move its begaining ?

I already ran CHKDSK but it didn't help. I will try TESTDISK.

How do I run it again since I cannot load XP? I don't have it on the CD, just the installed copy.

    Version 8
It is the first one, I didn't move its begining. Just removed the Suse partition which was the last one and then redistributed the free space.

    Hi Hyats,
I don't think that that PM caused the problem, you did by removing the Linux partition that grub was pointing at. In your position I would try a repair installation of XP, that should remove grub and repair the MBR.

    Roger;)

I have already tried the repair installation twice but that didn't work. The first time when it didn't work then I removed all the devices that could be removed and tried repair installation again. The result was no better.

restore the MBR by booting a dos disk and typing FDISK /MBR

u can do this with XP boot disk w/ FIXMBR as well ... i think ... oops ... i should read the thread entirely. see u tried this already.

Yes I did try almost every thing possible. Finally I had to format the harddisk and reinstall Windows XP  . Now I am installing all the required software and stuff. I was able to save my data though, as I installed a fresh copy of XP and got into the computer, then copied all the data from C to other partitions. But couldn't get the certificates, contacts and some other stuff.

    Thanks.
