    Hi,

I Have a problem with win xp sp1 the comp crashed the other day an since then not matter what i click on (ie.... shortcuts or applications) it tells me tht the file cant be found in the path specified so i done the normal things of checking for virus's an regisrty check an all of tht even roll back an re - install lol but to no joy

then i found out tht if you right click -> Run as ...

an deselect "protect my computer from unauthorised programe activity "

the program will run with no problem but it will not run anyother way?

If anyone one would be able to help me it would be much appriciated i've never come up against this problem before

IOWA--Perhaps this is answering the least important question first. What is Run As?
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,125187-c,windowstips/article.html
However, by deselecting "protect my computer from unauthorised programe activity" it would seem you are defeating the function of RunAs.
    More importantly
    1) When did this problem start? Did you install some new hard/software around that time? You could try a System Restore to a date before that time.
    2) Is there any reason why you are still running XP SP1? An install of SP2 might help
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx
(Note you can order it on a CD for about $5 if a download is too long.)
SP2 has many security improvements. SP1 is no longer supported by MS, so no Windows Updates.
    3) Can you look in EventViewer for the date and time the crash occurred to see what the problem was? Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Event Viewer|click on System|look for red ball Error. Send the report to MS, then also click on the go.microsoft link for more info and possibly a solution.
    4) If nothing has helped, you might consider this

First, use MS-MVP Ramesh Srinivasan's suggestions here to repair .EXE associations:
    http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/exefile.htm

Second, use MS-MVP Doug Knox's suggestion to repair .LNKassociations. This can be downloaded here: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/linkfile_fix.zip

Unzip and double click to apply the repair.

Third, repair your path environmental variable.
Right-click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Environmental Variables.
In the bottom box find and highlight 'Path' and click edit.
Make certain that somewhere in that string the following appears:
    Code:

    %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;

    Reboot and test.

You need to update to SP2. SP1 is no longer supported by Microsoft, so you are not getting the latest security patches!
