I have searched the sections and can't seem to find the appropriate board to post this to.
Earlier today my computer started beeping. I searched and found pages of explanations of what each code means, but the problem is the computer is beeping so much that I can't distinguish where they start and end in the morse type sounds.

I'm running Windows 98SE with 320 Mb Ram 5.96GB hard drive with 2.01 vacant.

Searching "system information" the following information came up in red header

    Processor Support
    System
    This device has a problem Code=2 (Ox2)
Device failure. Try changing the driver for this device. If that doesn't work, see your hardware documentation.

    REG KEY HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\enum\ROOT\SYSTEM\0000
    Allocated Resources - none
    Forced REsources - none
    Boot Resources - none
    Filter Resources - none
    Basic Resources - none

    Driver : system\0023
    Driver date 4-23-1999
    Driver update.sys
    File Size 60592 (OxECBO)
    File date 4/23/1999
    Company Name Microsoft
    File Version 4.10.2222

Now I know this is an old computer, but it has been maintained well and it was built like a tank by a computer guru. I've never (touch wood) had a problem in all these years.

I'm trying to find out if there is a correction /download/ etc that will solve this or is it toast?

It is operating fine except for the beeping.

I'm afraid to turn it off and leave it as maybe it won't restart??
It reboots without any apparent problems.

I have so much in the way of stored data,,,,,genealogies of several different families,,,,,lots of research plus all my business correspondence and histories on here.

I don't have a burner in the computer, so I need to know what is the best thing to do.......

Thanks if some one can tell me WHAT driver and WHERE to perhaps update it.

    Gloria

    Gloria,

Is there any message as to what device has the problem? I would think that it would be a little more specific then System. I don't think processors give beeps when failing. Any startup messages when you reboot? A Google search on your error message only brings up a reference to the USB port. Do you have anything connected by USB? Do you have another system that you can install the hard drive into? You could do that and copy any information that you may need, if you are worried about losing the data. Another thing to try is shutting down and checking all the connections. Pull out the memory and reseat them. Clean out any dust inside the case. Not sure what else to suggest without knowing exactly what device is causing the trouble.

    Mike

    Beeping Computer

    Hi Mike,
    Thanks for the response.

I've spent the last couple of hours searching internet for updates, but there are hundreds of intel updates and none specific to my Intel 82371.
Microsoft doesn't have anything about the beeping on their site either that I could find.

A check of driver devices on those free checking websites says the following are bad, in checking the microsoft device checker for these on the actual computer, the microsoft check says they are the latest and best for this system.
The analysis by DriverAGent.com really makes me wonder...$29.95 to subscribe and yet the computer itself says it is working properly and I have no problems except for the constant water torture beeping at various tones and speeds.

    Display adapters
    Graphics Blaster RIVA TNT BAD

    IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller BAD

    Network Adapters
REaltek RTL8029(AS) PCI Ethernet NIC BAD

    Printers
    Hewlett Packard Deskjet 930C BAD

    Sound vido and game controllers
    Creative Sound Blaster PC1128 BAD

BAD : Driver Agent has a newer or better driver for this device

I checked the connects ..took off and replaced and the only UBS is a cable for downloading for the digital camera,,,,,removing it makes no difference.
unplugged the keyboard and rehooked it also,,,,,,as you can see it is working fine.

    Any thoughts,,,,,,,,,,,,

As I said, everything is working fine

If all those devices need updated drivers, you should be able to find them on the manufacturer's web sites. Seems funny to me that all of a sudden new drivers are needed. Especially if nothing was changed. Are there any problems showing up in the Device Manager? You could also try removing the Intel device in Device Manager and rebooting. Windows should reinstall the device and, possibly, fix the beep problem. The beeps are definitely strange since everything works.

Download, decompress and run the Intel Inf Update Utility:
    http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scr...&strOSs=18&OSFullName=Windows* 98 SE&lang=eng
This should automatically update and reinstall the chipset drivers.
Here are some instructions, but you should only need to run the file called infinst_enu
    http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/inf/sb/CS-009272.htm

Afterwards, go to Device Manager (Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager tab), check there are no errors listed. If there are any errors, highlight the listing (click on it) and click Remove. You will get a message like "You are about to remove this hardware from your system ", don't worry, the device is not working now so you need to reinstall the drivers.

If the New Hardware wizard runs when you reboot, uncheck all the boxes for where "Windows should look for the drivers ".

Let us know if the error returns in Device Manager and the details.

I would be certain that major drivers are not working correctly and the beeps are saying the task cannot be carried out (maybe like "Ouch!" :D ).

If the major (chipset) drivers are not working correctly it will give errors in other devices because all the hardware runs through the chipset.

    Beeping Computer

    Hi Matt,
Thank you for the information. I have done as you said and the diagnostics has come up with one problem.

There are no other devices that aren't working according to DirectX and Diagnostic.

I downloaded a driver which shows it was for the sound blaster, but as you can see it doesn't seem to know it is installed.

When I downloaded it, I wasn't sure where to install it. There is a directX folder with setup subfolder, a separate Creative folder and of course Windows and programme files. Perhaps it isn't where it should be?

I checked the add/remove file and it has two Creative files and two for Sound Blaster. I can't find install disks or Cd's and so don't know how to disable it to confirm this is the problem and also couldn't reinstall if I remove them.

Can you perhaps tell me what Driver to go and get from the web and where to install it.
I have such a splitting headache from the noise! LOL It is coming out of the CPU the volume control mute doesn't even stop it.

I should say while loading the computer on start the sound doesn't start until the programmes start to load.

These are the messages that I have recorded over several diagnostic runs.

    Gloria,

You can find the drivers for your card here. #2 should be the one you want. When I download drivers for updating, I just save them to my folder for updates (C:\Driver Updates) and point Windows to that location. This is a folder that I set up so that I don't have to go looking for drivers all the time. As far as the double listing in Add/Remove, if it was me, I would remove one set of them.

    It is still beeping?

Did you clean the dust out of the inside of the case like Mike suggested? Dust needs to be cleaned out on a regular basis. You may need someone to help you if you don't feel confident (teenage boys would love to help out with something like that :D ). Inside you will see the fan over the Central Processing chip, remove any dust under the fan (loosen the dust with something like a thin knitting needle or hair pin), take the case outside and blow the dust out...maybe by a vacuum cleaner in blowing mode or you can buy compressed air in cans at an electronics store (Radio Shack) or even an office suppliers. Check for dust in all the vents.

If it is the "system" speaker that is making the beeps (not the desktop speakers, that's why you can't reduce the volume), it is saying there is something seriously wrong with the hardware.

Thanks Matt,,,,,,,I'll open it tomorrow and try cleaning it.
I have had the case off before so that isn't too big a chore.

    In the meantime,
I Checked Control, Add/Remove Programmes to see the listings for the programmes installed.

    It read:
Creative (NVidia3D chip series) driver (remove only)
    Creative Blaster Control 4.0
    Sound Blaster PCI128
    Sound Blaster PCI128 drivers

Since I can't seem to install the downloaded file supplied from the earlier mentioned site, I decided to removed the Sound Blaster PcI128 drivers

Prior to this I was getting an error message each time I tried to install it.
It loads the installation wizard, tells me it is proceeding to extract and goes to 100% and then it gives me the following and it must be closed.

I have total shutdown and also rebooting it......nothing helps, the driver won't install. I keep getting the above message each time.

I'm really sorry, I hate to be a bother. It just is so annoying. I have such a headache!!

Gloria, the hardware should be checked first.
It may be causing damage to the central processing chip and actually, I don't think you should be running it until you make sure that the processor is in "good condition ".

Start the system with the cover off. Check that the fan over the processor is spinning very freely. Check that the fan in the power supply is spinning freely (you should feel a good flow of air coming out where the main power is connected), of course, don't try to open the power supply.

It may have low power in the CMOS battery. Replace it. The battery looks like a silver coin on the motherboard. It should be a type CR2032.

There may be a bad setting in the BIOS. We could look at that if the other checks don't work.

Something has caused all the drivers to be "thrown out" and as you said it was meticulously maintained so I would suspect a basic hardware problem. You won't be able to "download" a fix for a hardware problem.

    Matt
Edit: Get a repairer to check and service it...that's up to you.

    HI Matt,
Thank you for the wonderful insight. It is possible what you are saying as it runs for the first fifteen minutes or so without any beeping. If I shut it down for the night or for a couple of hours, it has no beeping until 15 minutes or so after startup.

At this point I have no sound,,,,,,of course, I have removed the driver for the Blaster so I don't get email notifications, Windows startup/close sounds etc.

    One major question!!!!!!!
The guru that built this computer impressed very strongly on me that I should not take the cover off. He said touching it without an anti static mat would blow the whole thing.

I was very very careful when I unplugged the computer and took the case off last time. I have a feeling the beeping is caused by "heat" as the area by the fan is warm after a time when you touch the outside of the case. It isn't hot, but is warm.

I should mention that I do have an 18lb main coon cross long hair cat. When I had the printer cleaned the bar that the printer head slides on had a felt washer on the end..........turned out that it was matted cat fur!!!

I'll take it apart and look at the interior......just tell me that I'm not going to blow it up from static please. (I did open it couple of years ago to add ram with problems)

    Hi Matt,

Sorry, just reread my last line......I opened it a couple of years ago and added RAM,,,,,,I didn't have any problems. All went well.

    Cat? Sounds very exotic :D

You won't blow anything up if you are careful. Some people recommend using vacuum cleaners to draw the dust out, I strongly advise against it. At work, a fellow touched metal while holding a V/C hose and the electrostatic discharge knocked him off his feet and burnt his hand. Electrostatic energy can fry processor chips.

Touch bare metal before you touch the electronic parts, that will discharge your static electricity. If you walk away and come back, touch the bare metal again.

So...if you want to loosen the dust under the fan for the processor, touch bare metal first (part of the case frame should be enough). Bare metal fixings on a water pipe would be exellent grounding.

Be careful that you don't dislodge any cabling.

You sound cautious enough that there should be no problems. Don't forget to check that the fans are working, you won't need any monitors, mouse, keyboard, etc connected, just power it on and look inside. You may have to hold the power button in for 4 seconds to shut it off (turning it off at the mains power will not hurt anything either) .

    Hi Matt and Mike

Took the computer apart......wow,,,,,half a cat in the fan!!
I used qtips,,no metal to wipe the circuitry and old nylon on the pastic extension to the vacuum on the exteriod of the fan opening. Then opened the case, grounded myself and used a hairdryer on cold setting to clean the inside.
The fan vents (three panels of slots) were totally blocked!

I carefully cleaned them the say way.....a two foot plastic hose extension kept all metal away from the casing and boards.

Anyway,,,,,,no more beeping!!! It has been running after reconnection of all the applications (scanner, monitor, etc etc) for over 7 hours now without a beep!

NOW,,,,,,,,,how can I get the sound blaster card installed again?
I followed your instructions...Created "downloaded driver" folder and downloaded it to there...It unzips and right after 100% I get the following message

_INS5576 caused an invalid page fault in

I have done checks of free registry fixers......One found 800, One found 350, One found 500 approx. I know there are lots of registry entries from downloaded and uninstalled stuff. Can you suggest a good one of these and will it help?

Promighty Max found the most,,,,,,but then most 500 of the total were classed as moderate... "missing registries ". None were classed as severe

    Thoughts please.

    Gloria,

Great to hear that the beeping stopped. It's amazing what a little dust will do. You have to add that to your maintenance list for your system. The only registry cleaner I used was Regseeker. It works pretty good and you can just search for certain things. If it was me, before going the registry route, I would remove the card in the Device Manager. If I remember right, you will be asked if you want to remove the drivers also. Answer yes and reboot. The card should be installed. When asked for the drivers, point Windows to the drivers that you unzipped. Hopefully, that will get things going again.

    Hi Mike
The problem is that the downloaded driver will not extract and complete.
It goes to 100% extraction and then I get that error message.

I looked at Creative website problems and they suggested that Quick Time ..some versions would cause this error message. I removed Quick Time completely via uninstall and still have the problem.

Could you please be more specific in what I should be removing. I don't have the disk to reload this application as it came loaded in the computer. I don't want to wind up with nothing if you get my meaning.

    Thanks
    Gloria

    Gloria,

I would delete the first Creative download that you did and try downloading it again. If there is still problems, I would then get the latest version of QuickTime and try unzipping again. I can certainly understand not wanting to lose everything. So, hopefully that will help.

    Mike

P.S. Gloria, I'm seeing the Creative file as an .exe file, not a zip file. You shouldn't have to unzip it. Did you download the correct one? Just checking.

You did well on the cleanout Gloria, I'll put a hair dryer in my tool kit (also comes in handy for bad hair days :) ).

Registry...my suggestion, if it's not broken, don't try to fix it. If you have good speed and no recurring errors or unexpected problems, leave it alone. Let your system settle down for a while. If the only problem you have is that there is no sound, that will be a driver issue. The main way a registry will get corrupted is to install and uninstall lots of programs so be careful about what programs you install and if you need to uninstall them it may leave a mess in the registry. The programs you install should be well written and should be able to be removed/uninstalled completely. Dead links can be due to connections to things like CD disks, don't expect that they will be all bad and a cleaner will "fix" them. I try to avoid choking the registry by avoiding installing "dodgy" or unnecessary programs.

Sound card drivers...the previous owner will have had a good set of drivers installed, it should only be a matter of getting them recognised and installed correctly again. The error message could mean that drivers you are trying to install are not the correct ones. Try the suggestions, but I think there should be a way of getting the original drivers to install again.
One place to look is in Device Manager in Safe Mode. The original drivers will be listed under Sound, Video and Game Controllers. There will be a few drivers/devices listed there, but the ones to check (make a note of the model) are those with termed "Controller ", example, Creative Soundblaster 128 Live Controller.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the original drivers may iron out the "glitch ".

    So my suggestions are:
You need to correctly identify the model of the soundcard.
Find the drivers at Creative (or if the audio is part of the motherboard, they should be available at the motherboard manufacturer's website).
Uninstall/remove the drivers from Device Manager in Safe Mode. When you reboot, if you can't direct the New Hardware wizard to the location of the drivers, click Cancel, then run the Creative driver installation program.

This is a "completely remove and reinstall the drivers" method, so try any other suggestions first.

I have looked at a similar system (same Intel chipset). The drivers are "Creative AudioPCI (ES1371, ES1373) (WDM) ". I know it took some searching for me to find the correct ones.

The soundcard may be PCI 64, not PCI 128.

Do the "Identify your product" here:
