I am installing Xp Pro as I have a new set up. Not used the disk for a long time as I have luckily had no need to re-install for time.

Anyway, I am installing at the moment and every so often I am getting the message:

Windows is unable to copy the file XXXXX.xxx

It missed these (not sure about spelling for first)

    swenum.sys
    driver.cab
    stream.sys
    streamci.dll

Retry does not work so I have to skip the files. Can I just add these files later? Or is the install ruined?

I have tried cleaning the disk - it looks fine and there are no scratches. Why can Windows not copy these file. I know the XP Disk worked before.

EDIT: Just seen that the driver.cab has all the drivers in it - so I guess Windows install is useless...?

All the hardware is brand new, but could the CPU be getting too hot when installing large files?

    Thanks Bill.

Gunna try some mem tests - I have a memtest disk somewhere and will try your suggestion.

Will be VERY upset if the modules are dodgy as I had to RMA the motherboard bundle (CPU, MOBO and RAM) as I could not get POST and suspected a DOA Mainboard. They tested the kit and said the Mainboard was dead, but I also got a report that mem was thoroughly tested and passed.

The RMA took 2 months to sort from Komplett - I will never use them again!!

Initial memtest84+ v1.51 shows that memory is fine. I will leave it running for some time and report back tomorrow.

memtest86 is currently at relase 3.0

Even then it has proven unreliable with modern DIMMs.

Use the memory tester I linked earlier.

Bill, I don't think DocMem will run on XP.

    It has its own OS:

DocMemory is made by STT, manufacturers of equipment for DIMM manufacturers to test their product. See: http://www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products/doc/docinfo.asp

I can't seem to get it to run on my system. Reading the documentation revealed:

    Perhaps there is another version??

    It expands fine for me.

If you use WinRAR or have WinZIP or similar, have them unzip the file for your if you are having issues.

No trouble expanding the file - no problem making the floppy - it just won't boot the computer....non system disk. I do get an initial error during the floppy creation screen that says "incorrect parameter /s" which seems to indicate that it's trying to make a system disk for an earlier system.

You linked the wrong version (1.45) Bill. There is a version that works with XP but there is no direct link to it. You must register at their site to gain access.

    http://www.docmemory.com./default.asp

DocMemory PC Memory Diagnostic Software V3.1 Beta 2006 is the correct version for XP.

thanks for the tip on memtest - I will get the latest version and attempt your other tool, but because I can't boot to XP yet I might have trouble making the diskette.

Will report back after work to see let you know how I get on.

    Thanks again.

    hello again,

It seems the disk has either become corrupt, if that's possible, or is damaged. I can see no scratches and it's clean though!?

Tried a firends disk and it loads fine.

Thanks for the help though, I learned some things in the process.
