I have a website with sound on the first page, da-da-da-dum, and sound on the last page, clapping. Both sound files are mp3. For some reason I can not adjust the popups so I can hear both sounds. I either hear the first page or the last page depending on my adjustments, but never both. The site is <www.massphil.org>
Would someone with IE please check if they get both sounds and if so, how do I adjust so I can hear them both.
I have allowed popups from the site www.massphil.org but that only seems to allow sound from one page or the other, not both.

One page one I hear Beethoven.
On the last page I hear clapping.

Which makes sense as the EMBED tag is found only on the first and last pages.
The EMBED tag is a questionable one under IE.

    XP, IE 7 Final.

Thanks Bill. I neglected to clear my cache and the last page was left over from before I put the sound in. After I cleared the cache, everything was OK. Thanks again.

On my desktop with IE6, I cleared the cache but I still have a problem. I either hear the Beethoven or the clapping, never both. So if I hear the Beethoven and then go to the last page, I hear no clapping. If I hear the clapping and go to the first page I hear no Beethoven. Weird!
On my laptop, I hear both Beethoven and clapping with both Firefox and the IE6. Why is my desktop different?
My desktop has XP Home SP2 and my laptop has XP Pro SP2.
Both music files are MP3, and the code for playing them is identical except for the music clip name. The code for both is in the same location in the web page, just before </body>.

I am using XP Pro SP2 and IE 7 and cannot duplicate your experience.

    Check your settings here:

Tools, Internet Options, and under Settings for Temporary Internet Files you have the cache control. Be sure this is set to 'every visit to the web page' rather than a setting that reads stored pages.

It is very strange! When one page plays, the other does not and vice-versa. I checked to check webpage at every visit but it does not solve the problem. Everybody I know who has IE is able to hear both sounds but me. I wonder if playing the sound the first time somehow shuts off the ability for the browser to play the second sound.

That precludes a browser issue, sui generis.

I would change from the EMBED syntax to something else. As suggested earlier: http://www.tips-tricks.com/sound.asp

I think I figured out what the problem is but I do not know how to fix it. When I go to <www.massphil.org> page 1 of the website plays Beethoven. In the URL bar the location is shown as www.massphil.org.
When I click on the special annoucement page, IE displays the page but the URL box still shows www.massphil.org and there is no clapping.
If I type in the real URL of the special announcement page, IE displays the page and plays the clapping.
How can I get the real URL of the page to display in the URL box? This will fix my problem.

The URL is not the issue.

Go to the first page, right click anywhere on the page, View Source.

You will see between <embed...> tags the .mp3 that should play.
The embed tags are the same (other than MP3 to play) on both first and last pages.

I can go from first to last and back again and every time have the sounds play. I am using IE 7 and recommend you upgrade. There is nothing on the page(s) that need fixing.

    On your computer, in IE:

    Tools, Internet Options.

    Temporary Internet Files, Settings
Set the cache to between 50-100mb and no larger.
Set the caching option to 'Every visit to the page.'

    Temporary Internet Files, Delete Files.

    Reboot and test.

    Bill,
I have done everything you suggested. When I open the site <www.massphil.org> I hear Beethoven. When I scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Special Announcements, the page comes up with no sound. If I put the real URL in the box: http://home.att.net/~ackerberg/page6.htm
and hit return, the page comes up with clapping.
There seems to be some problem with IE6 on this computer. I have 3 other computers, 2 laptops and another desktop. I have no problem with any of the other computers as far as hearing both the Beethoven and the clapping. When the website URL <www.massphil.org> is displayed in the URL box the Beethoven plays but the clapping does not. When I put the real URL in the box I hear both Beethoven and clapping. You figure it?

As I have said several times above, the EMBED directive is not native to Internet Explorer.

    It is a Mozilla extension.

See if on the problem machine in IE, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, that you have all the settings boxes set to match a working machine, including enabling the use of third-party extensions.

    Bill,
I checked that all that stuff is checked, it is.
What is curious about this problem is this. Normally when I bring up the website using www.massphil.org the Beethoven plays but clapping does not. If I bring up the home page using the real address: http://home.att.net/~ackerberg/page1.htm
and then go to the clapping page, it displays
    http://home.att.net/~ackerberg/page6.htm
and I hear clapping. Once I have introduced this full address all pages display with it showing the real page in the URL box, rather than the generic www.massphil.org which normally appears with all the pages.
Now why this computer has this problem when the others do not is a mystery.
Perhaps, when IE loads that page with the generic address it does not read to the bottom of the page where the sound code is located-but when the real address is used it does! This is not a life threatening problem because I know it works for everyone else --but still there is something about IE which is not explainable. Although the embed command may not be a good one for IE, the fact that it works for everyone else but me indicates that is not the problem unless my version of IE has some deficiency.

Since you are using a referrer, the issue likely lies in your security settings.

XP has restrictiions on the use of resources that are referred from one Domain from another.

Check a working machine settings against the settings on the non-working machine.

    Tools, Internet Options, Custom settings.

    Bill,
I changed some of the settings, but it did not help.
I am tired of trying to fix this but would like to thank you for all your help. One day the cause of this problem will suddenly appear and I'll let you know what it was.
    Thanks again.
