It got great reviews and was cheaper than most of the others. CNET editor's choice awards and many excellent user reviews.

The reason I can't install KAV6 is because there is a leftover file from McAfee Pro 8, which I don't remember installing. I had v10 at one time but uninstalled it. I know there is a McAfee Cleanup Tool, which did not get rid of it.

How do I get rid of this darn thing, so I can install KAV6??? Trend, for example, had no problem installing with the McAfee on it.

    Thanks...

    Hello CrunchDude,

Go to the Kaspersky forums http://forum.kaspersky.com/

There is a section/sticky's on just this problem. KAV is "touchy" in this regard.

Thanks for the info. I actually solved the problem by just re-installing McAfee VirusScan, which created the McAfee security center and then uninstall it again. KAV6 installed without any protblems after all. Is KAV6 really that good? The scan and updates take forever. I hope it lives up to its hype, which is that it supposedly catches more than any of the others. Decisions, decisions...

    Hello CrunchDude,

The initial scan will take a long time because by default, the scanner is set to only scan new/changed files. The subseqeunt scan speeds will improve.

The first download is big - have to catch up after you installed. There are multiple updates per day.

You should "lurk" in the KAV forum - these issues were covered many times.

    Regards - Charles

Cool. Thanks again. So I take it you're using KAV6 as well? Have you found that it beats all the others as well?

    Thanks...:)

Yes I use KAV6 on one installation and use NOD32 on another. I'd be hard put to choose between the two.

Previously used NAV versions and got fed up with it.

The top tier AV's are all good - http://www.av-comparatives.org/

The issue is ease of use, resource usage, and how prone to problems each are. By and large, NAV along with McAfee lose in the ease of use and corruption sweepstakes. I have read that with the 2007 products, Symantec finally got the message and seems to be better in addressing those issues.

    Hi CrunchDude,

I wasn't on the OS that I'm running KAV on this morning.

To make sure that the scan new/changed option is running:

Double click the KAV icon in tray.

Once its up - under Protection, click on File Anti-Virus > in the right pane > click on Custom on the Security Level line > in the new pane click on Customize > Under Productivity, check, if it isn't already, Scan new and changed files only.

I'm moving this thread to the General Security section.

    Regards - Charles

I fixed this by myself as well (see Firefox :D ). I will post a quick rundown because this will likely happen to other people.

First of all, McAfee has a removal tool, which I've found to be useless over the years. So what I did was re-install only the anti-virus portion of the Internet suite, which created the McAfee Security Center that had been the culprit here. I then uninstalled first the anti-virus and rebooted. I then uninstalled McAfee Security Center in Control Panel and it looked like it worked. I did another reboot. Lo and behold, I was able to install KAV6 without further problems.

I hope this will help someone who has trouble switching to a different anti-virus program or Internet suite. :)
