have a clients machine that wont download adobes flash player and i have no clue why the download wont start. have checked pop-ups, cookies, security, privacy settings and set them as low as they will go. it appears it wants to display the gold active x bar but it doesnt appear. have even tried downloading the lastest m.s. media player 10 and it also wont download. have disabled the firewall to no avail still wont download.

directions would be appreciated. if you know where i can download the file without installing it so i can put on a flash drive and install that way that would be okay also. every download link seems to want to install during the download and wont let me just put on desktop.

i tend to agree with activex controls are not functioning properly but should that not be part of the security button and setting things to medium-low ???

gghartman--I have yet to work out the combination of all the proper settings in the Internet Sites zone to allow sites such as downloads from Adobe to work. It just is easier to put a few sites (like adobe.com and Windows Update) into the Trusted Sites, which seems to have the right combination by default.
And this way I can keep the higher security settings for all the other sites not in Trusted Sites, but rather in the Internet Sites zone.

charlesvar--Is this the success in downloading Player using IE7 that you mention?
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showpost.php?p=314379&postcount=27
I was never able to understand that post. I do not have the Registry key mentioned. (Nothing about Shockwave under Classes.) It seems garbled anyway.

P.S. I probably should not tempt fate, but I can download/install FlashPlayer using IE7--even though I have it installed already. I have www.adobe.com in my Trusted Sites Zone using IE7's default settings for that zone.

    Hi Jim,

Should have mentioned the tool the poster used - regmon. It seems anyone facing this problem will have to use a variety of tools to solve this problem, the point I was clumsily trying to make.

    Regards - Charles

flash player is listed as an installed program but when client goes to certain web sites it tells him he needs flash player 9 but the download wont start. gives no errors no beeping as if a pop-up was stopped nothing.

uninstalled flash player and installed version 8 from a quicken cd i have. still wont let me download version 9. makes no sense.

    gghartman--
Assuming that FlashPlayer is indeed installed, that message means you need to put the URLs of those "certain web sites " into Trusted Sites. Then the site will recognize that FlashPlayer is already installed (and the FlashP;ayer ActiveX control already downloaded). After putting the site's URL into Trusted Sites, either Refresh or reenter the site.

P.S. Looking over your earlier posts in this thread, I have a suspicion that FlashPlayer was installing all along (after you put www.adobe.com into Trusted Sites) and clicked Install. The site does not show anything happening when you install FlashPlayer, other than the revolving "f " image when installation is finished.

had already done the trusted variable not only for adobe but for download.com. got flash version 8 with a quicken cd i had but still when they try to watch a video clip no matter what web site it tells them they need version 9 and then when you follow the download links nothing downloads or installs - nothing. unable to view any video requiring flash player.

the actually install of flash player 8 is like you say very quick but it does show the install process and brings up macromedia logo then say successful. even after rebooting. still when trying to watch a wcco.com video or any video from a news organization say it needs version 9 but wont download or install. security and privacy settings set as low as possible, all pop-up stoppers disabled.

am totally clueless as to why this is happening or what to try next except for a total rebuild of the machine.....greg

gghartman--I think you may have misunderstood my last post and perhaps I misunderstood yours. You said you have FlashPlayer 9 installed, but that when you tried to view Flash content at a website (not adobe.com), you could not. I suggested you put the URL of the site containing the inaccessible Flash content into your Trusted Sites.
Now your most recent post suggests you do not have FlashPlayer 9 installed. You can test that at http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/welcome/. (But you must put www.macromedia.com into your Trusted Sites.) Click on the About buttons if you see any. That will show the version installed.
Adobe has caused some confusion. The FlashPlayer9 you are talking about is for the purpose of viewing Flash content at a web site. There also is a FlashPlayer8 which some people call a standalone app. It allows the viewing of a Flash (or .swf) file which you have downloaded to your PC. It is available here.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
Ignore the FlashPlayer9 offerings there. They are for very specific situations and/or are still beta. The one you want is FlashPlayer8 on that website.

no flashplayer 9 is not installed - i uninstalled what i found in add/remove and then installed version 8. whatever was installed wasnt working so no harm in unstalling itversion 8. so when client goes to say a tv stations site and wants to watch one of their videos as soon as you click on the watch video link it tells us that the player needs to be flash player version 9. it then jumps us to adobes download link for the player once we click the download button nothing happens - nothing downloads nothing is upgraded to version 9. macrocmedia and adobe and download.com which then directs us to adobe to download the flash player are all in the trusted zone.

if the program is installing and we just cant see it then why everytime we go to play a video say from a tv station it keeps telling us that version 9 needs to be installed and then back to the vicious circle.

Flash Player 9.0.16.0 (Complete Standalone Installer) - For IE only. http://www.softwarepatch.com/internet/flash.html
This is what I have been using. Could not get IE / Active X to allow a web install. Setting to trusted site, low security, no server validation just would not let it through. Tried the above local install, no problem. At the bottom of the page, their is another link which provides Flash and Shockwave combined local install.

    gghartman--
Because you have not put the URL of the TV station into Trusted Sites.
There are two FlashPlayers. When you install FlashPlayer9 (which is NOT a standalone FlashPlayer--but rather a browser add on to allow Flash content from a website to be seen), you see nothing happen. It also is not in Control Panel|Add/Remove.
When you install Flash Player 8 from here
    http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
(Ignore the references to FlashPlayer9 on this page.)
you are installing a StandAlone FlashPlayer which means it plays .swf files (and others) which have been downloaded to your harddrive. Afer installation you will find FlashPlayer8 in Add/Remove.
You can have both on your PC since they serve different functions.
The "StandAlone" FlashPlayer 9 mentioned in Dennis L's post is not a StandAlone player, but rather the browser add-on. Under Description on the linked page it says "Technically, this is a Flash Player ActiveX Control. It will only play the file through your Web browser (Internet Explorer). "
That sentence makes it clear that the site with the FlashContent has to be allowed to run ActiveX controls. As mentioned the simplest way to do that is to put the URL of the site into Trusted Sites.
However, if installation of the browser add-on from Dennis L's site is easier than using adobe.com's installation site, then by all means use it.

P.S. I know that Dennis L's link also claims to offer a StandAlone version of Shockwave and Flash Players. That may be true of Shockwave, but the Flash Player you will get is still the browser add-on, not the StandAlone player. However, there is no harm in having the Shockwave Player installed on your PC.
P.P.S. Did you try the Macromedia test page for which I gave you the link to see what Macromedia players you have installed on your PC?
    http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/welcome/
Remember to first put http://www.macromedia.com into your Trusted Sites.

i have every possible url placed in the trusted zone. the tv station, adobe, download.com zdnet.com, etc every place i tried to get the download from adobes site. nothing happens when i click the second download button on their site. the page does a downward shift like it wants to bring up the gold toolbar for activex install but if it is trying it doesnt display so i cant select to allow activex for the download.

every site i go to reacts the same way, once it takes me to adobes site for the actual download. i've disabled and allowed every thing i can think of including the firewall and antivirus program.

gghartman--Got me. Try lowering the Security level for Trusted Sites (or did you say you did this already?).
Did you try downloading from the site suggested by Dennis L?
