    Hi

I am currently running Windows XP Home Edition SP2. I have a directory on my "C" drive called My Music (which I created myself), it also has a personalised folder icon. I recently purchased a 250gb external hard drive which I can copy all my music across to just incase something goes wrong. I can't for the life of me remove the "read only" tag from this folder on my "C" drive, so I can't copy my music to the external HD. I have tried using regedit and entering a new d-word value as suggested on other boards, which didn't work, plus when you run cmd.exe, the default directory for changing file attributes always comes up as C:\ Documents & Settings, not just "C ".
Any help or advice that you guys can offer me, would be gratefully received.

    Regards

Even when set to read only you should be able to copy "from" the folder.

    What happens when you try?

I right click the folder and hit properties.
I deselect the "read only" tab and apply all settings to other folders and files within the "My Music" folder
Once it has gone through all the files, I click ok
As soon as I go back to the folder and hit properties, "read only" is still selected

Folders under XP are always Read-only, and this has nothing to do with earlier notions of Read-only. It is a flag to XP whether there is a desktop.ini file to be procesed by Explorer or not.

This attribute cannot be changed: You cannot view or change the Read-only or the System attributes of folders in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

It has nothing to do with read errors you are receiving.

    Try Start, Run, CMD

    md "e:\My Music "
    copy "\documents and settings\Chime\My Documents\My Music\*.*" "E:\My Music "

Please adjust paths in the above to suit your installation.
