Installing another operating system on top of Windows 2000

Hi, I would like to install Windows XP on my laptop that is currently running Windows 2000. Since I am not too computer inclined - can I just insert the Windows XP disk and install it on top of the existing one or will this mess everything up.

Your guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Note that W2K Pro can only be upgraded to XP Pro.

You boot normally and insert the XP CD and follow the instructions.

Hi Anne,

One thing I forgot to mention - back up your user files including the stuff in My Documents. Also don't forget archived e-mails. If you don't know where they are stored on your system, then upload them to the provider's server for later retrieval.

If something goes wrong, having your files backed up will make a clean install reletively painless.
