I have been manually uninstalling a scanner installation that did not work on WIN XP Home SP2.
I have removed many entries from the registry and deleted several files on the C-drive.
I have noticed that in the startup tab for MSConfig, there are 3 programs that are related to the scanner that do not start up.
I found that these programs are located in the registry as follows:
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Apparently this is what is causing these non-existent programs to appear on the startup tab. Can I safely delete these items in the registry so they no longer appear on the startup tab?

I know of no reason not to delete them from msconfig.

I hope you've either backed up the registry or created a System Restore point before modifyng the registry.

I assume that you did this (uninstall) manually because there were no Add/Remove entries, otherwise they also will be there.

    Regards - Charles

I do not know how to delete them from MSConfig. I want to delete them in the registry so they do not appear in the Startup tab of MSConfig.

    Hi ackerberg,

Sorry for not being clear - yes, deleting the registry entries clears them from msconfig.

EDIT: This is the kind of situation where having a registry cleaner is handy to have. As with every tool that impacts the system, it should be used carefully - foremost to be able to recover from either user error or tool error.

    Regards - Charles

Thanks for your help Charles. I downloaded the zipped version of ToniArts EasyCleaner and ran the exe program and choose the startup info. There were red dots next to the 2 programs I was wondering about, indicating they were bad links - the info about where they were starting was exactly where I thought it was in the registry. So I deleted them in EasyCleaner and then went back to check that they were missing from the startup menu and also from the registry. Everything was OK. BTW, that Easy Cleaner is a very powerful tool - this is the first time I actually used it even though I knew of its existence.

    Hi ackerberg,

Glad my suggestion worked for you, and you picked an excellent tool.

Funny, I did not see your edited message until just now, after I decided to use EasyCleaners. I guess there is really some merit to mental telepathy.
