Quick question, I have a new 19 inch LCD monitor. When I set the resolution to 1024x768 the screen is fine. When I set the resolution to 1280x1024 the screen shakes. I'm sure its becuase of my older Epox system bd. I'm using the on board video adapter and have it set for 32 mb of RAM. The video port is shared RAM, the OS is XP. I'm currently looking for a new system now. Can a member please confirm my thought process?

Try setting the refresh rate to 60.

You could also try 16 bit high color.

Look for updates for the chipset and graphics drivers. You said the graphics was onboard, so they should be at the Epox website.

Oh...and check the monitor manufacturer's website in case they have specific drivers for your model. If not, the monitor should be listed as "Plug and Play" monitor, not "Default Monitor ", in Device Manager. If it is set as Default Monitor uninstall the drivers, reboot and get Windows to set it as Plug and Play.

You should be able to find a list of supported resolutions for your adapter (if not at Epox, then the chipset manufacturer's website). A 32Mb based adapter will be pushed a little hard to run well at higher resolutions. Steve mentioned a refresh rate of 60Hz, the adapter's recommended rate may even be lower than this, but using it may give you eye strain (headaches).

Check that the case is clear of dust in case there may be high temps and that all the fans are spinning freely.

    Matt

I connected the monitor to another unit, set the resoultion to 1280x1024 and the display is fine. Must be an issue with the very old Epox board and the new 19" LCD monitor. I did flash the bios. Time for an upgrade!

    Thanks for the excellent advise!
