Outlook express will not open on my laptop. The program starts to load but then gets stuck. If i try to do anything with the program - the "not responding" message comes up. I have a suspicion that there is a TON of email in the inbox as this is my laptop and I dont often clean it out. I have disconnected Norton, restarted, closed all other programs. I tried uninstalling then re-installing OE using the check box in the Add/Remove Windows XP components wizard. Any other ideas?

westoverlane - Welcome to the Board :)

Try some of the fixes outlined in OE Repair Kit, particularly re-registering the dll's.
This does not uninstall/reinstall OE - it merely sets OE as default - or not. OE is integrated with IE and cannot be uninstalled.

Which version of XP are you running - SP 1 or SP 2?

    Outlook express still not responding

i tried all items in the OE Repair kit you suggested. I tried re-registering the items listed. they all worked except for the last one (regsvr32 msjava.dll) an error message came up as follows:

"Load library ( "msjava.dll ") failed - the specified module could not be found "

    any thoughts?

not sure which version of Windows XP I am running. how do i find that out? Its more than 3 years old if that helps.

Right click My Computer icon > Properties - the info is there (screenshot)

Read through this MS KB article .....

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP

In SP1 it is quite straightforward, in SP2 much more difficult.

I am away now for 2 weeks so hope someone else steps in to take this further.

Since a legal battle with Sun MSJava is no longer included with XP, but if OE worked before without it it's absence should not be an immediate problem.

However probably wise to install Sun Java (co-exists with MSJava if present), download from here.

westoverlane--For reasons that remain incomprehensible, the link for Sun's Java which PeteC provided does not give you the download for the latest version of Java--now Update 9.
You want Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9 from this link
    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
This is some bug in Sun's site, not PeteC's fault.
