    hi all
another newbe, this goes out to the staff, you guys are great. i've read alot of stuff and you have helped alot of people, now its my turn please. my pc has gotten very slow, i believe i have a virus of some sort (clean pop-ups, not ****). i, like probably many other people got cought in a scam, i was downloading a torrent file for the grudge-2 and it instructed me to download a program in order to recieve a password for a rar file, since then my pc has been messed up. i have used many different virus scans like adaware, spyware terminator, spybot and even avg anti-spy(since reading these posts)
so please help, i realize this wont happen overnite, since you probably have a million requests, but i can't deal with it anymore and idon't want to format so i will be patient.
    thank-you

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Forums.

Well, if you had waited we could have saved you the trouble of DLing and running those two apps, because you don't have either infection. Tho I am surprised that the AVG scan didn't find what's in your log, other than what is in system volume info folder.

You have a LOP infection. This infection is not very prevalent in the wild, it is usually installed by users who install an app called MessengerPlus!3 and don't see the notices about eh 'sponsor', re:adware.

If you installed it once and then removed it, you need to re-install the app, with the adware option enabled, then uninstall via the Add\Remove control panel, following all prompts.

If you just happened across this infection some other way, continue on as instructed below.

Below you will find my results and recommendations. Please read ALL instructions carefully BEFORE proceeding.

Please follow these instructions, exactly, for proper HJT installation. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. It also needs to be removed from the desktop.

You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe)Move HijackThis.exe into this folder. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

Run Hijackthis and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
    Click Start.
    Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.
    Click OK.

And search for, then delete, if found, (some may not be present after previous steps) the following files/folders:
    C:\DOCUME~1\keith\APPLIC~1\MEMOHO~1<<<<---this folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\INSIDE LITE ISO LOGO<<<<---this folder
    C:\DOCUME~1\keith\APPLIC~1\MOVEST~1<<<<---this folder

To exit Safe Mode, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, click Restart.

Post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

Ok, that last log appears clear, are you experiencing any problems at this point? let me know please.

We have 3 more things to do, to help ensure you have removed all the little 'leftovers' which may be hiding:

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp folder
The app below will help with temp files.
    Index.dat Suite

Also, delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion.

Here is a link which describes how security apps work with WIN XP machines.
XP User Accts Security Apps Operation

To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL the apps below, which are just as good the fight against ad/mal/spyware as AdAware & Spybot S&D:

    SpywareBlaster
With SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 , just DL, install and check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using IE restricted sites protection as it's not a very large database. Use IE-SPYADs below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine install WinPatrol v10.0.5.

Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

Links for tutorials for all the apps I mentioned can be found on my site as well.

Confused about which apps are good or not? Read about Rogue/Approved Anti Security apps

And just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly. Keep track of updates for ALL your security needs here:
    Calendar of Updates

Subscribe to update alerts for all the above security apps here.

You can also see my own ongoing security testing with all the above apps proving how securely you can safe with them installed.

hey tom thanks for everything, cpu is running good now, i did basically everything in that last post right up to the part starting with spyware blaster. iespy. mvps. winpatrol. siteadvisor. are these all programs you think i should load, and run all at once. and you mention spyware blaster, is that the one you recomend the most cause as mentioned i downloaded many other ones but not that one (avg, adaware, spyware doctor, etc.) so i will download that one also, but do you recomend getting rid of the rest of them or keep them around, lastly when running sp-blaster is it just a weekly scan or is it a program i should leave funning in the back groung all the time
well again everything is good and i will be awaiting your last post.
    thanks a million
    keith:)

    hey tom
now that i've actually read up on spyblaster and found out that it just prevents ad\spy ware from comming back again i figure it is left on all the time? so what spyware do you recommend, and again do i leave it running all the time or just weekly scans, cause ive read that leaving all these programs running really slows down systems and mines not very fast (p3 1gig ) so i would have running
    norton anti virus
    ad\spyware software
    spyblaster
    and other things like e-mail(incredimail)
    messenger
quick time(don't know why i have it but its there(task bar))
    and musicmatch jukebox
    lot of stuff eh.
anyway i will let you go thanks again and just a little advise about what was last said.
    keith

p.s. you will probably see me again soon with stats on my brothers cpu, its messed up,(****)lol.
    thanks again:D

Not a single one of these is going to use up any noticeable CPU. That's the beauty of them. IE-SPYADs and the hosts file don't actually 'run'. They are databases that are polled and come into play only when you try to access the sites contained int he database.

WinPatrol will use only a tiny bit of CPU and that's only when it's working which isn't all that often. SiteAdvisor has had a few complaints about slowing down browsing, but not because of excessive CPU. It just has to call out to the SA site to gather the info on sites. But with 1GIG of RAM, you're not likely to notice anything at all.

I would of course keep one anti-virus, no need for two and perhaps one active monitoring anti-spyware, which I think Spyware Doctor does. Any others you may want to keep, need only be for on demand scanning.

All of the items listed do get occasional updates, and all of them are listed on the Calendar of Updates site. (plug...I'm admin there:rolleyes: ) But even if I wasn't the idea behind the site is great.

You can go thru your PC process by process to see what is not needed to be running at start up.

Here is an excellent site for that:
    AnswersThatWork
Just go to the appropriate letter, and search for the process/exe, they will give good detailed info regarding it, we use it quite often. If you can't find it there, then use Google.

Hope that's been helpful don't hesitate to ask any other questions.

Oh, and start a new thread for the brothers pr0n infected box. Tho, to be honest you can safely view tons of it and not get infected, you just may not want to tell him that. :p
