I have managed to get the file menu moved to the top (where it should be) by adding a registry key, does anybody know if it is possible to move the "links" to the bottom as it was in IE6 so it is below the address bar.

One thing I have noticed that when using tabs IE7 uses 50% of my resource and my fans go crazy, is it possible to remove the tab function?

To remove the Tabs, is very simple, do the following

    Tools
    Internet Options
    General
    Tabs / Settings

From here you Enable/Disable Tapped Browsing

    Thanks for that.
Just need to move the "links" to the bottom as it was in IE6 so it is below the address bar.

    Anybody managed to do it?

Right click on the toolbars, uncheck lock the toolbars. Then put your cursor on the word "Links" in the links toolbar and click and hold the left mouse button. Your cursor should change to a four way arrow of sorts. When it does, drag the toolbar down. Works for me.

I tried to drag the "Links" down but it will only go up and I require it to be at the bottom just below the address bar, in any case I have the menu bar at the top and moving it up screws up the menu bar.

When you unlock the toolbar the configurable toolbars will, on the far left, have a dotted border. You can move a dotted border toolbar to any other dotted border location -- only.

For XP Professional gpedit.msc allows moving the menu bar to the top as a group policy object. User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Internet Explorer/ "Moving the menu bar above the navigation bar "

I actually looked at the group policy editor a few nights ago but it did not met my needs, I have put an image of the proposed layout at this location:

yes, I have the resource hogging tabs turned off. I am begining to understand that it will not be possible as IE7 is not as configurable as IE6.

Your registry edit for the Menu bar is identical to what gpedit.msc does. I do not understand your claim that it is not suitable for your needs.

The Links toolbar cannot be moved as you show.

The Tabs are not resource intensive. Something else is going wrong on your installation. Use the RIES feature: Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, at the bottom to Reset IE Settings. This will disable all add-ons. Then use Task Manager and sort by CPU. This should show you the resource intensity of IE with tabs enabled and then disabled as you make that option choice.

I understand what you are saying, will just have to live with the links in the default setting, still think that one should have a choice and some degree of customisation.

I must admit I do like the tabs so I have checked the memory usage (after setting back to default) as follows:

Opens with local home page = 34,352k
    Select web site tab 2 = 41,724k
    Select web site tab 3 = 52,904k

    Close tab 2 & 3 = 44,360 (so that is approx 10k not returned - not a problem)
    Shutdown IE7
Open IE7 with local home page = 23,932k

Would you think that this level of memory usage is correct for IE7?
Will keeps tabs, and see how it goes, as before my fans were kicking in every 5 Min's, I get less fan noise when I am rendering videos......

Yes. Similar results obtain for additional Windows versus Tabs.

I really am curious as to your CPU utilization results. That is what would kick the fans. Task Manager should show it.
