(winXP Pro; OE 6.0; IE 6.0; Dell Dimension XPS T450MHz Pentium III; Norton AV)

Outlook Express is not sending out my msgs and for the last 2 days they have been accumulating in the Outbox. All other OE functions work properly. For the last 2 days I've been on the phone with my server (RCN) and they couldn't help. They sent a technician, he tried to fix it and couldn't . He then called RCN himself and they couldn't help. These are the errors I receive each time I try to send my messages:

    Error on one account:

    Error on the other account:

The "one of the recipients was rejected ", it says it in each and all the messages. (They should revise their error msgs!)

As to "too many recipients" (452), I was told on the phone I can send up to 400 per message per hour... but my list consists of only 230 recipients!!!

What I did: I moved those messages from the outbox to a temporary folder, leaving only one in the outbox ...It didn't get sent out! I split the list in two and sent it out twice...still didn't get sent out!

I'm at the end of the rope...hope someone knows what to do? So sorry for lengthy message, and thanks so very much for any help! Adela

Adela--Taking the first message at face value, it says "'530 Authentication required' ". In OE Tools|Accounts|Properties|Servers tab there is a box to check "My server requires authentication ". Check the box|Apply|OK|Close.
Any help in sending your email?
If not, same place, is "Logon using secure password authentication" checked?
Uncheck it and see what happens.

Concerning the second message, do you have your antivirus program scanning outgoing mail? If so, turn that feature off. If that does not help, what happens if you try to send individual messages from your New Message window, not the Outbox?

P.S. You mention this has started only recently. Have you tried System Restore to a date before the problem happened?

Make sure that your firewall is not blocking router registration.
For XP SP2, this setting is found under Advanced, ICMP, as "Allow incoming router requests. "

Oh no! I just lost my response when I went to make a little correction on the Preview Post accidentally...I rewrote it here...

Thanks again Jim. About these 2 items: "My server requires authentication" and "Logon using secure password authentication" I've been keeping its boxes unchecked to avoid my having to fill out the "user" and "password" data each time I open as I found this too annoying and time consuming. But I'll try it and will report.

Where do you check this, Jim? I looked all over but can't find it. When I had Grisoft I knew it scanned outgoing emails because it had a signature to that effect on each msg sent, but Norton doesn't do that...

I did try it first thing but didn't help.

I'll try this the last, as it's one of the more intimidating things for me... :) Is this done with the Dell Resource CD? They sent it with the computer.

The links you sent: System Restore and antivirus program scanning lead to what looks like ads for equipment(?)... :)

Meantime I received another contribution - thank you Bill!

The last techi I had, I believe installed a software firewall. Not sure. How can I search to see if and which he installed? As to the SP2, because he also installed a NON GENUINE winXP  I just discovered, I am not allowed to do windows updates so I don't think I have it... However, I'd like to find the ICMP to see if I do have it, but I'll send this msg before I lose it too. :D and will report. I believe the advanced is in Tools, Account, etc.?

Thanks again to both of you! :) Adela

Microsoft lumps IGMP and ICMP together as to settings; the setting you want is in the IGMP group for Router registration.

If you have a firewall installed, and I most certainly hope you do, you might look near your clock to see if there is an icon for the program.

    Adela--
    .
Note my suggestion was that the "Logon using secure password authentication" box be unchecked.

In Norton AV the setting for not checking on outgoing mail is Options|AntiVirus|Email (in the left panel). "Scan outgoing Email " should be unchecked.

    System Restore
NO!! System Restore is part of WinXP. You should learn how to use it.

Hopefully you have it turned on already so you have some System Restore points to use.

    ???? Did I send links?

That may not be so bad, since the WinXP Firewall is not the best. What firewall did the tech install?

What is keeping you from doing Windows Updates? That is not a good situation. What is happening when you try? Any error messages?
Before you answer, put the Windows Update site into your Trusted Sites and see if that allows you to get Updates.

    Hi,
I am not going to say this is the fix that is needed for sure but in similiar situations when there is a problem with sending out emails, the first one may have for example a typing error in the address and that will back up all others trying to be sent out afterwards...I do not know how important the emails you have saved in your outbox are but if they are not emails you need to keep, try deleting them all from your outbox, then delete them from the delete box and reboot your computer...Keep us posted.
