Everytime I start the computer, when it gets to the desktop screen, it comes with a message that MS16C.tmp could not be opened and that I could have a chance of looking for the program on the web or open it up from a list of programs. What could be the problem and how can I fix it? THanks for any help

It is probably malware and I suggest .....

Please download HijackThis through Quicklinks in my signature and save it to a folder on your hard drive, say C:\HJT - not to the Desktop or a temporary location. When entries are fixed with HJT a backup is made to the folder from which HJT is run and this must be in a permanent location.

Open the folder in which you placed HJT and double click on hijackthis.exe and select Scan and save a log file - this will be saved in the folder from which you ran HJT.

Post the log in your next post here.

I have moved your thread to the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum.

Scan again with HJT - this time select Scan only and place a check mark against this entry and click on Fix ....

    O4 - Startup: Indigo Prophecy Registration.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\Installer\MSI6C.tmp

This is the Registration link for Indigo Prophecy - do you have this game loaded or is this perhaps a leftover from an incomplete uninstall?

Removing the 04 entry will stop the popup message re. ms16c.tmp

The file in question appears to be related to your xBox\Atari set up, which is referenced in your HJT log as:
    O4 - Startup: Indigo Prophecy Registration.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\Installer\MSI6C.tmp

I'll go out on a limb here and say you can mostly fix that with HJT with no ill effects.

Before you fix anything tho, you need to install HJT properly:
Please follow these instructions, exactly, for proper HJT installation. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. It also needs to be removed from the desktop.

You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe)Move HijackThis.exe into this folder. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

Run Hijackthis and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

That should cure the alert. Let us know if it does not.

I also notice you have some items perhaps in MSCONFIG set not to run, you should really use a start up manager instead, its a more secure way to control what starts and what does not.
