Worst Bsod/Stop error 0xD1 ever?

A new record in computer crashing?

I was cleaning registry and old unused USB-units in an old XP installation, completely patched to the latest level. And wham, a Bsod that I didn't read to carefully. Strange enough the computer didn't reboot properly when I restarted it and Bsod:ed again, during startup, with stop error 0xD1 in atapi.sys (IDE-drivers). I decided to reinstall completely, long overdue... with a fresh XP-CD. But that doesn't work either!

So far I've tried the following:
1. Installed te latest BIOS from Soltek (SL-75FRN2-RL-motherboard)
2. Changed a broken chipset fan, cooling the Nvidia Nforce2-chipset
3. Harddrive repartitioned below 137 GB, NTFS-formatted and complete erasure of the drive (Maxblast4 over night).
4. Ran Memtest86 for a couple of hours, no errors.
5. Disconnected the power, took out the CMOS-battery for a while.
6. Disconnected ALL extras. Just one harddrive, 1GB memory, graphics card, CD-ROM and DVD and an old keyboard and mouse.

And guess what happens? When I reboot with the install XP CD it works fine until XP asks for reboot to continue the installation. And when the installation is about to begin "for real ", I get a Bsod and Stop error 0xD1! I can't even install XP! The complete code is: (0x94712421, 0x00000005, 0x00000001,0x85FD1CA3)

When I reboot again XP tries to restart the installation, asks för the XP-CD and I get another Bsod, also with the Stop error 0xD1 but a different error: (0x45FDOC86, 0x00000007, 0x00000000, 0xF778B348) and it points out atapi.sys = the IDE-drivers.

This is completely insane. I have never experienced this kind of trouble, unable to make a clean install with everything fresh!

I will be extremely grateful for any ideas/experiences about how to solve this one!

I'm beginning to suspect that the nVidia nForce2-chipset might be damaged in some way, but determining that is above my current knowledge.

And unplug any unecessary peripherals, such as unecessary USB or firewire devices.

I've disconnected just about everything. Even changed keyboard and mouse to old p/s2-ones. Absolutely no extras, except for that both a CD-ROM and DVD-reader is connected. No printer, no internet, no firewire-stuff, no scanner, no iPaq, no camcorder, no camera...

The release is the vanilla one. Have SP1 and SP2 on two separate CD:s.

Are there known issues when installing XP vanilla version? I've installed from it several times and have never had this problem!

137GB total drive, not partition.
You should slipstream Service Pack 2 into your base XP Image and install with that.

There is no reason to fuss with Service Pack 1 as SP2 is inclusive of all SP1 changes.

I just happen to have XP SP1 on a CD. I used it before SP2 had arrived.

Now, about the size of the drive, of course you are correct! Maybe this is the problem, because the drive actually is 160 GB and I've been partitioning it to about 90-110 GB and an additional partition with 50-70 GB. I have a week memory of using som kind of program called something like big_disk_enabler a long time ago.

I've begun to create the slipstream SP2 version but I'm working from my spare computer, a laptop that can't burn CD:s so this will take sometime...
