There is a fix at Kelly's Korner, but whether or not it will work for you I don't know .....

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm - scroll to Address Bar.

You could consider a System Restore - I wonder if your programming altered something in Windows shell?

Themodem--Do you have any Toolbars (between the TitleBar and the IE screen) at all?
If yes, right click a blank spot and check Address Bar and Standard Buttons.

Close all instances of IE. (Check Task Manager to be sure).

    Start, Run, regsvr32 /i BROWSEUI.DLL

    Start IE and test.

    If no joy:

    Start, Run, regedit

    Navigate to:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar

Right click on the "WebBrowser key" and Delete then click Yes.

Exit and start IE, use View -- Toolbars, and checkmark those desired. Test.

Interestingly, Bill, that update was offered to me (I accepted) last Patch Tuesday. Wondered exactly what the relevance was as I was not offered it on the laptop.

Desktop running IE 7, laptop running IE 6 - case closed :)

All XP Home editions are 32-bit Windows.
All XP Professional versions are 32-bit Windows.

The 64-bit versions of XP are clearly marked as such, and require special hardware.

Alicia J--I have a suspicion this is more info than you want, but have a look at the first 1/3 of this reference
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Windows#32-bit_operating_systems
You almost certainly have the 32-bit version of Windows.
I believe one way to check is Start|Run|type winver|OK. If the resulting window does not explicitly state that you have "Windows XP 64-Bit Edition" or "Windows XP Professional x64 Edition," then you have a 32-bit version.
I believe the number of programs written for the 64-bit OS is small.

EDIT--I was typing while Bill Castner was posting. :(
