Netscape 7.2 won't load

    Netscape has decided not to load today! An error message says to update Netscape. This had been done but even that won't load.

    In your Preferences, use "Blank page ", instead of Netscape.com for your Home Page (which is the default)
    Edit|Preferences|Navigator

    Now open your Mail Window
    Edit|Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings|Server Settings
    Disable: Empty Trash on Exit

    With Netscape closed
    Open your *.slt file
    Delete the following files:
    localstore.rdf
    XUL.mfl
    Delete the chrome folder

    If this folder exists, delete it also.
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE\1.4f_2003062408
    It creates these Registry keys:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\GRE
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\mozilla.org\GRE\1.4f_2003062408\AppList

    DO NOT DELETE THIS GRE subfolder: 1.7.2_2004080415

    REBOOT your PC

    Now see if Netscape will start.

    Thanks, Ramona. I've done all of this and it still won't load. It opens for a few seconds and then says it has encountered a problem and has to shut down and the remedy is to update. The updated version won't load either.

    An update is not a solution. NS7.2 is the last one of the kind. NS8.x is totally different. You say that you updated. How? And, I gather from what you said, that this malfunction was sudden.Did anything happen at that time?

    No changes have been made to any programs in the computer; Netscape is the only program with problems. We can open Netscape but can't keep it open to get into Netscape 7.2 mail. After beginning, an error message says: Netscp.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.

    When the error report is sent, the only 'solution' that is offered is to updated to the next version.

    This is what I suggest:

    Uninstall Netscape using Add/Remove
    Delete the mozilla.org folder: C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org
    Make a backup copy of your plugins folder
    Delete the Netscape folder: C:\Program Files\Netscape

    Reboot your PC

    Reinstall Netscape

    Did this help?

    If not, then try creating a new Profile. Don't move anything to the new Profile yet. Just see if Netscape will open using the new Profile.

    It worked! Someone else was following the instructions while I was out of the office and their only hangup was finding the 7.2 download site. Once that was found and downloaded, all is well. Thanks!
