Yeah... saw that but recheck might be in order?

Meanwhile Kelly has a restore display fix here.

The DllCache has to be there but hidden because system file checker fills it up with the freshest Dll's. If it ran with no errors then event viewer will say only start sfc and stop sfc.

Sorry to butt in but the ballgame isn't started yet and I got bored.:D

Edit: Forgot to say the fix is at #285 on the right.

Thanks to you all, My bad, I had windows enabled to show all files and folders and took the checkmark out of Hide extensions of known file types but neglected the Hide Protected Operating system files. Pete, has your heart stopped pounding yet:)

    The DLLcache was in Blue

On to Kelly Corner, I did this already but not since I ran SFC

    Be back

Nope, its still missing after kellys fix and a reboot. I have been in touch with ATI, waiting on them to get back to me, I may just uninstall the drivers for my Radeon 9550 and download a new Catalyst package and see if it makes a difference.

I will post back when this is done ( hopefully sometime this weekend )

Well that is a relief, Ken :)

I will be interested to see if re-installing the video drivers solves the problem, but I won't be holding my breath!

In the meantime a possible workaround, if you find it aggravating not to have access to the other display tabs, is to run the desk.cpl from the startmenu runline using control.exe to call up the particular tabs you want. See:
    control.exe desk.cpl,,5 (is Themes tab)
    control.exe desk.cpl,,0 (is Desktop)
    control.exe desk.cpl,,1 (is Screen Saver)
    control.exe desk.cpl,,2 (is Appearance}
    control.exe desk.cpl,,3 (is Settings)

While this doesn't help when trying to figure out where the file/reg glitch is, at least you may be able to take some of the sting out it.

I know you stated this happens on a right click "Properties" choice on the desktop but I'm curious if it also happens from the control panel>display or when logged in as another user.

    Good Morning goddez1

Thank you for your reply, everything shows up from the run commands that you posted and I also have access to them from the Control Panel > Appearance and Themes. All I get when I right click the desktop is the Appearance Tab and its very limited, but with your run commands and going into the Control Panel, I have full access to them. I am the only user on this computer, so switching users is not an option.

    Ken:)

    Hi Pete,

Was away over the weekend and was so busy at work yesterday my head is still swimming. First off let me thank you for hanging in with me and for all the fine support. This is what I did when I got home this evening.

    1. Created a Restore Point.
    2. Used an uninstall tool from ATI to uninstall all ATI software.
    3. Installed the latest ATI Catalyst software.
    4. Checked in Device Manager and all was well.

At this point after I right clicked the desktop and went to properties, still no luck with all the display tabs. My ATI Control Panel was also missing so I could not resize the desktop or adjust the color , so at this point I got fed up with the whole thing, restored my system to before the ATI upgrade and I am some what back to normal except for no display tabs showing. I have goddez1 instructions in the run command so I can change things there or in the control panel....so I am going to just leave well enough alone right now and go on with my life.

Thanks again for all your help.

    Ken

Sounds like your done with it for a while.

I didn't see a reply if you had tried checking your policy settings...I know...this is more for me a "just have to know' thing on my end...totally up to you.

If you haven't, and you do get the urge to dink around again, go to run and type gpedit.msc and drill down to this location.
    User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\
Display. Just open up the appropriate setting, click disable, click apply, click not configured, then click apply. This identifies the key and creates it with the setting disabled if it wasn't there, then removes the key entirely.

Or you can go right to the registry key below and delete the keys you don't need.
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

** Standard registry warning here...Always back up the keys you are working on or the entire registry and don't even mess with it if you are at all uncomfortable working in it as it can render your computer unusable**

    Hi, Ken.

Would you mind checking your C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\ DRIVER.CAB, SP1.CAB, and SP2.CAB to compare your file sizes to mine? (I also am using Windows XP Home.)

    • C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\DRIVER.CAB
      Size: 74,902 KB [73.1 MB (76,699,621 bytes)]
      .
    • C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\SP1.CAB
      Size: 9,921 KB [9.68 MB (10,158,890 bytes)]
      .
    • C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\SP2.CAB
      Size: 21,724 KB [21.2 MB (22,245,337 bytes)]

I am also curious about the exact contents of your "Windows File Protection" events listed in Event Viewer after you run sfc /scannow to completion. If you have the patience to nurse SFC along to completion again, I expect the contents of those Windows File Protection events (indicating which files "could not be copied into the DLL cache ") might help narrow down your problem and what to do to resolve it.

Event Viewer can be accessed as follows:
    Start > Run... > [FONT= "Courier New"][SIZE= "3"]eventvwr.msc[/SIZE][/FONT] > OK button

The "Windows File Protection" events of interest are in the "System" section of Event Viewer between event ID 64016 (Windows File Protection started) and 64017 (Windows File Protection completed). Either double-click an event to open the Event Properties window or right-click on the event and select "Properties ".

The contents of each of those events can be copied to your clipboard in the "Event Properties" window by clicking on the button below the up/down arrow buttons (as shown in my attached image). You can use the up/down arrow buttons to scroll through the event properties of events without having to close the Event Properties window.

I assume you know how to paste the contents of your clipboard into Notepad and/or a forum message. :)

    mailman,

I am at work right now but will be happy to post the information later this evening. I know how to copy an image but not sure how to add it to this post.

    Ken:)

It doesnt' come with gpedit but there is a way to add it and get some of its functionality. That can be found on the web. Here was one link I found

    http://fhctech.org/fhc/systems/policyeditor.htm

The main thing that gpedit really does however is just change registry keys. I exported the keys below so you can see what and where they are. Setting the keys below to 0 will bring back the display tabs. Deleting the keys below will also bring back the tabs.

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
     "NoDispAppearancePage "=dword:00000001
     "NoDispSettingsPage "=dword:00000001
     "NoDispScrSavPage "=dword:00000001
     "NoDispBackgroundPage "=dword:00000001
    Later

Also, I think TweakUI also will let you do quite a few nice registry changes without actually having to jump into the registry.

Create a new text file in Notepad.
Open it and paste the following:
    Code:
    <?xml version= "1.0" encoding= "UTF-8" standalone= "yes "?> <assembly xmlns= "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion= "1.0 "> <assemblyIdentity processorArchitecture= "*" version= "5.1.0.0" type= "win32" name= "Microsoft.Windows.Shell.shell32 "/> <description>Windows Shell</description> <dependency> <dependentAssembly> <assemblyIdentity type= "win32" name= "Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls" version= "6.0.0.0" publicKeyToken= "6595b64144ccf1df" language= "*" processorArchitecture= "*" /> </dependentAssembly> </dependency> </assembly>

    Save the file
    Rename the file to WindowsShell.Manifest
Move the file to your %SystemRoot% folder.
    (almost always C:/Windows)
    Reboot and test.

By the way, the file should appear like:

    It Worked !!!!!

    Bill Castner :)
Your fix worked, I have all my tabs back when I right click on the desktop and click on properties :) :) :)

    LostUser
I have windows enabled to show all files and folders and took the checkmark out of those two tabs and in C:\windows\drivercache\I386 there is no files in there???
System file checker ran fine, there are no entries between 64016 and 64017 but in the same time frame it is showing all errors reading my CD-Rom.

I had the I386 folder copied to C: from my original XP Home disk and when I created the slipstream disk I deleted that folder. When I try to copy the I386 folder to C:, from my new slipstream disk, it get as far as the Monitor7.in and then says it cant read the disk. This is a brand new Samsung DVD writer that I installed a few days ago. I know it works because I have burned about 6 data and photo CDs for backup.

    Pete,
Thanks again for hanging in with me:)
