I'm getting an intermittent problem: when I press any key, the (left square bracket) sign appears repeatedly and I am unable to type anything. The left square bracket itself will not type now, hence spelling it!
    Any ideas?

Do you have access to a wireless keyboard you could hitch up to the laptop temporarily? I guess there is no PS/2 socket for a standard keyboard.

No Pete, I only have the laptop.
The problem does seem to be with the left-square-bracket button....even though I never use it.....as I said in my post, the button itself will not work and if I fiddle about with it when the problem occurs, it seems to correct it.
I've tried vacuuming the keyboard, but no help.
    Any other ideas...a hammer perhaps!!

It sounds very much like a physical keyboard fault rather than a software fault, in which case professional attention is required.

If you are of a mind to apply a hammer :D you might consider seeing if you can 'pop out' the recalcitrant key - it's possible there is a foreign body lodged under it - but don't ask me how to replace it :)

    Thanks Pete,
Have tried to remove key as I never use it, but no joy.......don't want to force it.
Don't know whether it's anything to do with it, but when I turned on the PC this morning, a loud repetitive beeping sounded for about 6/7 seconds - this did sound once before during use. The sound ceased, then no problem, except with the key, which as you can see is currently ok.
When the key problem does occur, the audible "dunk" sound which you sometimes get, turns into a repetitive machine-gun-like stammer.
Professional required, or does this ring any bells?

Continuous beeps from the BIOS on boot generally indicate a keyboard problem so I think it is trying to tell you something :) Snag it, it is an intermittenf fault - the worst kind!

    Thanks Pete,
What do you mean by "Snag it "? Is this a PC techy term or is this a polite way of swearing, as it is a difficult problem to eliminate ?

Not difficult for a techie who knows how to remove the keyboard, which may need replacing.

    Peter:

If its a 5100 - keyboard replacement is very easy. One or two s_crews (can't recall) on the top panel plate closest to the screen and then slide it left - pops right off exposing keyboard connector (small ribbon cable) and keyboard s_crews. About a 3-5 minute job and replacement keyboard should cost you roughly $45-50.

    ;)

OK, I think thats one of new shiny little silver ones. Haven't had to pull one of those apart yet but you should be able to get it fixed without having to raid your piggybank.

    ;)

Guess in the future I'll need to decipher 510 [[[[[[[[[[[[[[La[[ptop as a 510M

    Hi Peter,

I am by no means an expert on laptops, but my son-in-law had a similar problem on his Dell, and I found that the keyboard simply popped up by using a very gentle leverage at two or three places. His problem was because of breadcrumbs! Be gentle!!!
