Shortcuts to IE, not Firefox

    Hi all,

Ok, don't hate me because I use and prefer Firefox. :p But I do, and it is my default browser.

However, at work many of our intranet apps require IE (and no, IETab in FF doesn't work for them). So what I've done is create shortcuts to the specific intranet addresses. The problem, of course is that when clicked on, Firefox opens because it is the default browser. So I'd like to keep FF as my default, but make it so that when one of these shortcuts is clicked, IE will open instead.

Can this be done and if so, how?

    Thanks!

PS. I'm running IE7 if it matters.

Shortcuts will always open the default browser.

The only way I know is copy the shortcut URL and paste it into IE. Even if you drag the shortcut and drop it on the IE shortcut, the default will open.

There may be extensions out there that might do it but I don't know about them.

Edit: I just tried another way. Open IE and drag your shortcut to the address bar and it will open in IE.

You need to make a shortcut that launches IE at the URL you want to go to.

Create a short cut, right click properties, in the target line type

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" followed by space followed by the URL or IP address you want the shortcut to open.

    Examples:

    "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" www.google.com

    "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" http://www.windowsbbs.com/

    "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" 209.191.93.52

Note, this assumes you have XP and installed in default folders. If necessary change the path to iexplore.exe. Put path in " " as there are spaces in it.

Your way is even better. I wondered how to get some to open in FF and some in IE.

    Thanks JRosenfeld.

    JRosenfeld,

Thanks! Much appreciated! One more question... Now that these shortcuts are opening in IE, I notice that it is opening in a brand new IE window. Now, I'm using IE7 and would like them to open in the same window, but a new tab. Is this possible? I've already enabled "reuse windows for launching shortcuts ", but that didn't do it. Suggestions, please?

    Chris

Sorry, took a bit of research, but I found a way (by reading a post from someone who wanted to do just the opposite!)

in IE 7 create a favorite to the link you want. Then in Windows Explorer, go to C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Favorites. Rightclick on the favorite you want, drag it to your desktop or to the quick launch bar in the task bar, click copy here. Clicking on the icon in the quick launch bar opens a new tab in the already open IE 7. If no IE 7 window is open, it opens a new one with just that page.

As you said, in IE tools, intenet options, general tab, Tabs settings, you do need to have 'new tab in the current window' checked.

EDIT: I have IE as my default browser. I have just noticed that the above procedure just creates a normal shortcut for a web page (e.g. http://www.google.com as the target line). I had forgotten that you have firefox as your default browser, so I suspect those shortcuts will open in Firefox for you. Very sorry, I got carried away. (-:

I don't know if there is a command line switch to open a page in a tab; if there is, one could write a script that checks whether IE is already open, if so opens the URL in a new tab, if not opens IE. But I don't know what the command line switch would be (or even if there is one). Nor apparently do others:
