Is playercodec1038.exe a legitimate file? [SpywareQuake?]

Is playercodec1038.exe a legitimate file? Three days ago a Web site informed me I needed to download it so a video file could be played. I'm not sure it's the cause of several problems I've had since, but I'm suspecting it could be. A Search can't find it anywhere on my system, and Google doesn't seem to have ever heard of it. Safe or trouble?

The problems? Now Ad-Aware hangs when it gets to the deep scan of the Registry, specifically HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\. And RegSeeker (both v1.45 and the new 1.50) hangs after they scan and then switch to Analyze, v1.45 getting as far as HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. When I used v1.50 to search the Registry for any reference to that file, RS froze almost immediately. A Norton A-V scan shows nothing. A Spybot scan showed 29 items that I deleted, but the scan took maybe 3 times as long as usual.

Any of that suggest anything?

This is most definitely one of the rogue codec sites, please post a HJT log as Pete suggested, install as instructed below please.

HiJackThis v:1.99.1zip.
DL the zip file to your desktop, then create a new folder on your C drive, called 'HJT' or 'HijackThis'. Then unzip the files to the new folder. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

Run the program, and press Scan. You will notice the Scan button will turn into a "Save Log" button. Save the log and Post that log onto this topic. DO NOT DELETE or modify anything yet, as some of it is needed to keep your system in proper working order.

OK, those 017 entries are sign of hijack, and you should also remove SpyHunter, Enigma has a long history of being shady.

Lets run the check for the nasty codec, see what it finds.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter "; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool "; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore you may get an alert.

 

TeMerc: Ran into a problem. When I double-clicked on smitfraudfix.cmd, a Norton AV alert window opened:

An action window showed "Stop this script (recommended)" among others and an OK button, which I pressed. Should I have gone for one of the other choices?

The process window showed an illegal command notice (or something like that) and "Press any key to continue." When I did that, the window disappeared.

 

This is pretty much what your av encountered, let the script run please.

 

Another problem. There were 5 or 6 options in that NAV alert's actions window. None of them led to what your directions indicated, and at least one of them changed something so that I no longer get that NAV alert containing the different options. What I do get is another window, titled "C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe" and showing this:

The smitfraudfix.cmd file is already an unzipped folder on my Desktop, and the process.exe file is part of that same folder. Now what?

BTW, I removed SpyHunter but not the 017 entries because I wasn't sure if I should yet. Should I go ahead and do that?

 

Turn off your Norton av, then DL a fresh copy of the file.

Go offline, run the file, generate a log, post it back here. You can turn on av once script is run.

Norton may have stripped the file.

Ok, next step:

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site. Please follow the instructions exactly in the order listed; this is very important!

Please download, install, and update the free version of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 formerly Ewido Anti-Malware:

1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu ".
2. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found! ". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
3. From the main Ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
4. After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful "
5. Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? "; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter ".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

AFTER SmitfraudFix finishes (and after a reboot if required), please open Ewido. (If a reboot is required, please boot BACK into Safe Mode.)

• Click on Scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "Remove" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop
• Close Ewido

Then please restart it into Normal Windows. Please post the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt into this thread, along with the Ewido (please edit out all cookie references) report and a new HijackThis log.

Ok, got a couple of items to get fixed.

Please follow these instructions, exactly, for proper HJT installation. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. It also needs to be removed from the desktop.

You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe)Move HijackThis.exe into this folder. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible


Run HJT, and place a check next to the following lines, then, with all browsers and windows closed, hit 'Fix checked':

Here's the latest:

After I ran the scans and fixes last night, the only oddity I noticed was that my Desktop was all messed up. The background color had changed from the custom color I'd programmed, and the icons were scrambled all around. No major problem. I've already changed things back to the way they'd been.

This morning I did the HJT scan and fix you last suggested and then rebooted. Two issues remain. First, RegSeeker, both version 1.45 and 1.50, still hang my system and cause Task Manager's CPU Usage meter to shoot up to 100% and stick there as I reported on another forum here. Second, I have icons for MS Word, Excel and Published on my Desktop. When I click on the Word icon, a Windows Installer window opens saying it's preparing to install WinWord. Then the program opens and runs OK. Clicking on the Excel and Publisher icons don't cause that to happen, the programs just open normally. But then clicking on the Word icon again causes the Installer notice to reappear. None of these aberrations were occurring a week ago. Any ideas?

 

Try this for desktop:
Go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "Web Pages" you should see an entry checked called something like "Security" or similar. Select that entry and click the "Delete" button. Click OK then Apply and OK.

For the other apps, I can only surmise they were corrupted somehow by the infections.

Are the icons new or were they always there? If they are new, I'd delete them, and create new ones. If they are old, try the same, it could be related to the desktop hijack somehow, tho I can't be sure TBH.

Well, it all didn't work out too well.

I deleted every trace I could find of RegSeeker 1.45 and also 1.50, downloaded a fresh copy of 1.50, ran it, and it behaved the same as before -- it scans OK, but when it gets to the analyzing stage it freezes at 0% and CPU usage registers 100% and sticks there. I can't find any source for v1.45, but it had misbehaved similarly although it would find 13 items before it froze. The last time I ran it successfully all the way through was probably a few months ago.

I deleted the MS WinWord icon from my Desktop, then replaced it. Same thing, I get the Windows Installer notice and then Word loads and works OK. No such notice when I click on the Excel or Publisher icons.

The Control Panel > Display plan didn't work out, either, because when I got as far as the Web tab, no Web pages are listed and I don't have any desire to have any showing on my Desktop, just programs and applications.

I didn't do any rebooting during any of that. Would that make a difference?
