    Hi,
I have a Compaq 5320US, and the power supply went bad.
So I bought a generic supply and re-wired the 24 pin ATX connector
to what seems to be the right wiring pinnout. ( Thanks to Rockster and
Mattman for the info.!) This model has a proprietary power supply with non-standard wiring, so I had to do some re-wiring of the ATX.
I installed the new supply, and things seemed OK, Windows XP comes up, and the USB and network ports are good.
But, I cannot see the two CD-ROM drives when I look in MY COMPUTER. They do not show any icons, although both drives have power. They light up and spin, but are not otherwise connected. I tried re-seating the cable, but it did not help.
I looked in the device driver section, and it said "the device is working properly ". I also tried rolling back WinXP to an earlier date, with no effect.
Do you have any idea on how to further troubleshoot this? I am
wondering if there was some damage when the old power supply went
bad, or if I may have an issue still with the new power supply wiring.
I would appreciate any help you can give me.
    Thanks!

    CD-ROM Drives Still Lost

    Pete,

OK... I went to the Microsoft link, and carefully edited the registry. They say to delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters; only the Upper was there. I also went into Device Driver ( method 2) and uninstalled both IDE drivers. ( Note, neither driver had a ? next to it.) Both seemed to successfully reinstall.

I then rebooted, and received a windows message " new hardware detected" etc. , which gave me some hope for success.

But unfortunately, after reboot I still do not get the CD-ROM icons in MY COMPUTER. I also then allowed Windows to upgrade the Intel 82801BA driver, but this too had no effect.

Is there a next logical step?
    Thanks!
    Hank

    CD-ROMS Still Not Responding

    Pete,
I tried the Doug Knox executable, but am still without
    any Icons.
I am open to further suggestions if you have any other ideas.
    Thanks,
    Mechanic

We don't know if the computer is actually communicating with the drives, so try booting to the Windows CD or another boot CD to make sure.

I might wonder if the ASPI layer drivers are corrupt.

Since it has happened after the power connectors were changed, check in the BIOS settings at startup for readouts of the voltages. The connections you made should be nice and tight?

    CD-ROM Problem Solved

    Pete and Mattman,

I tried out the substitue drive idea. ( also presented by Peter in a
past posting ). I took a new cable and hooked up a working CD-ROM
unit. It worked perfectly, and I was able to see the icon in My Computer.
I then connected the new cable up to one of the exisiting drives, and again
it worked fine. So, I concluded that the existing cable was bad.

I used the new cable to connect both both exisiting drives. When I did that, once again neither drive would show up on My Computer. ( So it was
    not the cable after all.)

It looks like the second drive is blown, and was dragging down the good
working drive along with it. What was confusing is that device manager was
saying both drives were working fine. I will get along OK with the one drive for now.

Once again I appreciate the help and guidance.

    Thanks!!
    Mechanic

Unfortunately that information is not always correct and should not be relied upon when there is clearly a problem :)

Glad to hear that you got to the root of the problem - thanks for the update.

A maybe, but worth investigating. If they are jumpered as CS, try them as master/slave and visa versa.
