A good friend has a Word document in which he wishes to start page numbering from the 4th page with the number 1.

Any ideas how to achieve this?

I have tried page breaks and torn my hair out trying to figure out fields. The closest I have got is a field code of ....

{IF{PAGE} > 3 "{PAGE}" " "} which leaves pages 1-3 devoid of page numbers, but starts numbering on the 4th page with 4 and not 1.

BTW the field braces are put in with Ctrl+F9 - not typed in.

Field codes were sourced from ....

    http://word.mvps.org/faqs/numbering/PageNumbering.htm

but playing around with the formatting has not yielded the result he wants.

Anyone familiar with these field codes?

Nice try, Steve, but no cigar :)

Been there, done that. All that does is start the page numbering on physical page 1 with the number you select in the dialogue, say 3.

I received this response from Tyke421 - not had a chance to evaluate it as I am away as of tomorrow am .....

    1. On the page you wish you start the numbering (let's say it's page 4 for this example), insert a "Next Page" section break.
    2. From the View menu choose Header and Footer.
    3. Click in the footer of page 4.
    4. On the Header and Footer toolbar, click the "Link to Previous" button to break the link between page 4's footer and the footers on page 1-3. You'll notice that the note at the top of the footer that said "Same as Previous" has disappeared.
    5. Click in the footer of page 4 to make sure your cursor is inside it.
    6. From the Insert menu, choose Page Numbers.
    7. Click the format button and select the radio button for Start At and enter 1 in the box. Click OK.
    8. Counterintuitively, you'll need to leave the box for show number on first page checked, since technically you're starting the numbering on the first page of the new section, so click OK at this screen.
    9. Your page numbering should now start at 1 on page 4 and will not appear on any previous pages, but will continue to appear on any subsequent pages
